On the road to 2046 (2046-7)

The Road to 2046 Begins

The first moves for El Paso as we attempt to improve in 2046 have already been made. Boone Carlyle, the Chilis pitching coach for some years was still rated as a poor coach so he was dismissed in the last month of 2045 and replaced by the inexperienced Jesus Franco. It might be Franco’s first role, but I am told he will have a far better influence of the team’s development, he certainly can’t have any worse. Hitting coach Emilio Clemente was also engaged by El Paso as they attempt to improve the quality of coaches.

Luis Maldonado has decided not to opt out of his contract and so will remain with El Paso for the next two years. Former El Paso / Wichita players Seitaro Ugaki, Ernesto Ramirez both were in Albuquerque and released at the end of 2045 while Chili players Juan Hernandez, Mario Rodriguez & Jim Gouzzie did not have their contracts extended. Hernandez had struggled to get any playing time for a while now while Rodriguez had lost his starting 2B role to Mike England, Jim Gouzzie had had six years as the starting 3B but had lost his job to Ross Quicker and El Paso were unwilling to pay his demands for an extension. Jose Torres had left after his contract expired as well; he signed in the 2044/45 off season and managed just a total of 1.1 innings in three games before he suffered a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament. He spent the rest of his contract on the IL and was not offered an extension to his one-year $3,000,000 deal.

We only had four arbitration cases this year and one of the few advantages of losing 100+ games is that as long as you don’t ridiculously low-ball them, you don’t lose many of the appeals. The Arbitrator ruled in favour of El Paso in the cases of Jeremy Webb, Clive Timberlake, Jose Montoya and Julio Garcia. All of whom received a one-year contract less than $1 million.

Having made a profit of nearly $13 million in 2045, the biggest yearly profit in the franchise’s history, we can once more be a player in the FA market. We still haven’t enough money to be in the market for a top-class pitcher, so will, in all probability, have to rely on our rookie pitchers doing better in their sophomore BBA seasons for the bulk of our potential 2046 improvement. We have however added three players to the roster already.

36-yr-old Tony Alomar has been resigned on a $17.6 million 3-year deal (only two guaranteed) after being traded to Sacramento mid-2044. He had gone on to have a brief spell with Twin Cities before hitting the FA market. Not used in the same Stopper role as he was used in Wichita, he has only added eight saves to his collection but has posted a 12-6 record in 32 starts split between the Mad Popes and the River Monsters. He might well get a chance to earn a rotation spot in Spring Camp. Also arriving is 27-yr-old David Guerra, he signed a four-year $9.9 million deal (the last two years being a vesting & team options). He has had eight years of BBA experience split equally between Charm City and Madison, he will be ticketed for a bench role backing up second base and third base. The third signing was 23-yr-old CF Cesar Alvarado on a minor league deal, he has already spent time in the minor league organisations of Beirut, Edmonton, Valencia and Twin Cities before picking up with us. He will head for A-ball Topeka to start 2046.

I can take none of the glory for it. It was, as if you can’t guess, another of @CTBrewCrew ’s outstanding graphics
