Sim 12: June 15th – June 21st

For the first time in a long while El Paso finished a sim off the bottom of the Frontier this late in the season. The worrying thing is that Calgary & Las Vegas are getting away, now three games ahead, and the only team below them is Mexico City who at some stage will surely turn it round and join the others in roaring into the distance.

Game 67 & 68 @ Phoenix Talons

6/15 @ Phoenix L 0-7
6/16 @ Phoenix L 2-3

After two really good results against the Talons came the crash that earned Phoenix a share of the four-game series. Chilis trailed 0-1 after four innings before Talons put them away with six runs in the seventh innings. El Paso only managed seven hits all game, surprisingly Fernando Figueroa got three of those hits, going 3-4 and taking his batting average over .200 for the first time (.205).Gerald Sizemore was unlucky, he pitched six innings allowing seven hits, a walk and a single run while striking out seven; he was tagged with the loss though as Chase Walter relieved him and promptly failed to get any of the seven batters he faced out., four hits, three walks and six came around to score. It was closer in game two, El Paso was 1-0 up after one innings, 1-3 down after five innings, Chilis tried to close that gap but could only manage a seventh innings run. Tommy Cochran went 2-4, the only El Paso batter with more than one hit but failed to do anything with them. Jeremy Webb & Kade Lebowski scored the two runs. Jose Montoya was tagged with his eighth loss, not helped by walking seven batters in his five innings of work.

Games 69 & 70 @ Boise Spuds

6/18 @ Boise W 4-2
6/19 @ Boise L 2-4

El Paso got back to winning ways in Boise, The Spuds had jumped out to a first innings 2-0 lead but Chilis had levelled the game by the end of the fourth innings. El Paso grabbed the win with a 2-run homer by Jeremy Webb in the seventh innings. Kade Lebowski going 2-4, scoring twice and Jason Bowen, also 2-4, driving a run in. Ramon Guerrero walking three in his seven IP but collecting his fourth win while Augusto Ramirez took us the rest of the way without giving up anything to claim his seventh save. The score was reversed in game two with two runs in the second and two in the third for Spuds being enough to split the 2-game series. Mario Rodriguez went 2-4, scoring once for Chilis while Jason Bowen, back into his 2044 form, hit his 11th homer of the season. Sumitomo Takahashi took the loss, dropping his record to 4-4 in his rookie season.

Game 71 & 72 vs Atlantic City Gamblers

6/20 vs Atlantic City L 7-11 (33,115)
6/21 vs Atlantic City W 8-4 (41,244)

While we had fancied a result against the Gamblers, they came out with a bang, four runs by them in the top of the first innings became 8-0 before we scored in the bottom of the fourth. El Paso’s four runs scored over the course of the last two innings flattered to deceive. Jeremy Webb went 3-5, scoring three times and driving two runs in while Tony Hernandez went 2-4 with a walk, he collected three RBI and scored once. Jorge Garcia returned for another chance in the rotation and managed just five outs. He allowed seven hits, two walks and six runs in 14 batters faced, dropping his record to 0-4. In the next day’s game Chilis fell behind 0-1 but were able to turn that into a 5-1 lead after three innings. This was El Paso’s 30th win of the season, well ahead of recent tallies by the franchise. Tommy Cochran went 3-5, scoring twice and driving one in, Luis Maldonado went 2-4 with a walk, including his 16th homer and ended up scoring twice with two RBI. Gerald Sizemore was a bit wild walking five batters but held on to improve his record to 4-6.
