Sim 11: June 8th – June 14th

As we reach mid-June Chilis are still bottom of the Frontier but it’s beginning to bunch up at the bottom with just two games separating the bottom four sides. With 25 home games played El Paso have passed the 1,000,000 mark through the turnstiles.

Game 61 & 62 vs Jacksonville Hurricanes

6/8 vs Jacksonville L 8-18 (41,246)
6/9 vs Jacksonville L 6-13 (52,028)

It was a hard end to the series with the Hurricanes as Jacksonville picked up two crushing wins. Game one opened up like an NFL game in the first three innings – 7-0, 3-0 & 3-0. The main bulk of Chilis runs came from three in the fourth and a defiant three in the bottom of the ninth when the game was long since gone. Jeremy Webb, El Paso’s SS vs lefties, went 2-5 including his second homer of the season and ended up with three RBI while Luis Maldonado’s only hit was a three-run homer. Game two wasn’t much better, although El Paso led 3-1 after one innings it was tied at 3-3 after two and 3-run innings in the fifth & ninth innings for the Hurricanes made it a comfortable win for them. Luis Maldonado flashed the bat again, going 2-4 with two homers, scoring twice and driving three runs in. Fernando Figueroa, proving an absolute rock in defence at CF, went 2-4 scoring once and lifting his batting average to .188. Gerald Sizemore at least lasted until the fifth innings before he got the hook having given up nine hits and six runs.

Games 63 & 64 @ Mexico City Aztecs

6/11 @ Mexico City W 10-8
6/11 @ Mexico City L 2-6

Following a rainout, we ended up playing both games in Mexico as a double-header. The first game saw Chilis snap the 3-game losing streak helped by a 4-run burst in the third innings with two more in the sixth wrapping the win up. Ross Quicker, hitting lead-off, went 2-5 and collected five RBI mainly due to a 3-run homer in the third innings, Luis Maldonado continued his hot streak with his 14th homer of 2045 in the first innings and used a walk & reached on an error to score two more times. The night cap too looked promising for El Paso as they led 2-0 after four innings but the Aztecs pulled themselves together and scored six unanswered runs over the next four innings. Tommy Cochran went 3-4 but could only manage a single run scored driven in by Mike England, the only success in his 2-4 night. Ramon Guerrero pitched into the seventh innings, four hits, four walks and three runs given up was enough to drop his record to 3-6.

Game 65 & 66 @ Phoenix Talons

6/13 @ Phoenix W 5-3
6/14 @ Phoenix W 5-1

Chilis got a bit of a boost in Phoenix against a team that they have done better against then others in the Aviator’s years. It didn’t start too well, El Paso trailing 0-3 after five innings but a flurry of five runs in the eighth stole the win for the Chilis, Tommy Cochran 3-run homer helped that. Luis Maldonado also adding a run and an RBI from his 2-4 day. Sumitomo Takahashi pitched seven innings to improve his record to 4-3 while Augusto Ramirez pitched the last two innings, not giving up anything, striking out four batters. Talons scored first in the bottom of the first innings of game two but four runs in the fifth sealed a win for Chilis who limited Phoenix to just four hits. Jason Bowen only hit was his 10th homer of 2045, Tommy Cochran went 4-5 scoring once and driving in two runs. Chris Sackett walked four more in his seven innings of work but managed to improve his record to 3-4 abet with a worrying 7.43 ERA.
