Week 1: April 1st – 6th
So, here we are again at the start of a new season. Unfortunately, the Aviators were swept in their opening series, but they have recovered their poise to win two out of the first three games in Mexico. The fourth game of the series against the Aztecs is tomorrow.

Games 1, 2 & 3 vs Edmonton Jackrabbits

4/1 vs Edmonton L 5-7 (39,830)
4/2 vs Edmonton L 2-8 (38,396)
4/3 vs Edmonton L 0-2 (31,921)

Opening Day 2044 started well enough with rookie DH Guillaume Martin hitting a first innings 2-run homer but fell apart not long after as Jackrabbits scored three in the third innings and four in the fourth. A succession of late single run innings, including Martin’s second homer, closed the gap, but the game had gone. Martin ended up with 3-4 and a walk, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Takanori Goto on the back of an impressive 2043 opened 2044 poorly going just 3.1 innings before being yanked having given up seven runs on seven hits & a walk. Four runs for Edmonton in the sixth scuppered Aviators chances of winning game two, Wichita managing just four hits themselves. Damon Tipping’s line had a symmetrical look to it, pitching into the sixth he gave up six hits, six runs, four walks and struckout four batters. In the final game of the series Edmonton outhit Wichita 5-4, scoring in the first and the seventh innings to blank the Aviators. Rookie Ramon Guerrero was unlucky to pick up the loss, he pitched six innings giving up four hits and two walks while allowing just one run and striking out three batters

Games 4,5 & 6 @ Mexico City Aztecs

4/4 @ Mexico City W 3-1
4/5 @ Mexico City W 11-2
4/6 @ Mexico City L 3-7

Mexico hasn’t often been a happy hunting ground for Wichita, but they started well enough there this year. Three runs in the first two innings during the opening game of the series was sufficient to win the game, Aztecs lone reply not coming until the bottom of the ninth. Duane Whitley Jr opened his long ball account for 2044 with a 2-run shot in the second innings and the much maligned Jose Montoya, he of the 32 losses over two years, picked up the Aviator’s first win of 2044 going 5,2 innings giving up five hits and a walk but no runs. Wichita finally clicked into gear in the series’ second game, outhitting the Aztecs 15-5. They made that count running in two runs in the fourth innings and four in each of the fifth & sixth innings. Guillaume Martin was on fire again slogging another homer and finishing with stats of 4-5, scoring three times and driving in three runs. Duane Whitley Jr added two more homers, driving in four runs while Luis Maldonado hit his first homer of 2044. Former Rule 5 pick Chet Dickinson allowed five hits and two walks over six innings but came away with the win. This gave Wichita at least a share of the 4-game series which was just as well as they slipped to defeat in the third game when Aztec’s six runs in the first two innings had the game in the bag already. Backup catcher John Todd went 2-3 with a walk and an RBI while Maldonado went 2-4 with a run driven in too. Last years nine-game winner Takanori Goto was victimised again, this time only getting five out before the hook came. He had given up another seven hits and six runs.
