The Eve of ’44, on the mound

So here we are again, on the eve of another Opening Day. The rosters are in, the travel orders are signed for the unlucky and the last bus to the Job Centre is about to leave for the ones we are saying farewell to. With a relatively young squad we have been able to get away without needing to waive anybody, a couple could have gone that route but were saved by finding option-laden youngsters to take the fall for them instead. Only one of all our non-roster invitees survived the cuts and needed to be added to the 40-man, next year is anticipated to be the big rush for that.

The Rotation

Yet again this will be a complete shambles, we’re hoping that Takanori Goto who posted nine wins and an ERA under 5.00 can reproduce that form again. Former Rule 5’er Damon Tipping rewturns and will be hoping to improve on his five wins in 2043. Lefty Ramon Guerrero, acquired in the Ramirez trade, is finally added to the 40-man and grabs his chance in the BBA. 24-yr-old Jose Montoya gets another chance, he’s lost 32 games over the last two seasons, but we just can’t believe he hasn’t got it in him and rounding out the five is lefty Chet Dickinson, a Rule 5 pick in 2043, posting a 3-10 record he shuffled between the pen and rotation last year, but a reasonable spring has given him the chance to start in the rotation this year.

The Bullpen

Major surgery to the pen this year as two retired and quite a few more just ran out of usefulness. 34-yr-old Tony Alomar is back though to add to his 97 saves posted over the last four years. Two new relievers, 29-yur-old Lucio Gomez and 36-yr-old Julio Velasco will help out at the back end of the ‘pen. Gomez arrived on a three-year $13 million deal while Velasco was a Rule 5 pick. The middle innings work will hopefully be taken up by four specialists, Luis Miguel Flores, R.J. Davis, Ignacio Martinez & Julio Garcia. Flores had a 2-6 record in Wichita with six saves and an ERA below 3.00. Martinez & Garcia did well in the Coyotes Triple-A winning side last year while Davis was a Rule 5 pick. Another Rule 5 boy, Mutsuhito Imai was returned to Charlotte as we just couldn’t fit him into the numbers and team spokesman John Todd had already had a quiet chat about Imai perhaps being a bit too disruptive for our player’s liking.
