Of Arbitration (2044-03)

Everyone’s a winner

It turned out to be an easy set of Arbitration hearings for Wichita in 2043. The franchise had spent $3,500,000 voiding the team options of Sean Maguire & Mauro Flores and had non-tendered Francisco Mendez (good waiver pickup but better options now), Bernardo Longoria (failed to vest, good stats but clubhouse cancer) and Duane Coutts (just not good enough any more). So, in the end the Aviators were left with just four arbitration cases to contest.

25-yr-old LF Juan Hernandez has 499 BBA games in four years for Wichita. Normally a top of the line-up man for the Aviators he has scored 206 runs in his time in Wichita and has stolen 120 bases in 150 attempts. It was a down year for him in 2043, he slipped from 2.0 WAR to -1.4 WAR and was generally down in all offensive categories. He went into the meeting demanding a salary $1,245,000.

Decision: Hernandez awarded a salary of $850,000

Another 25-yr-old LF, Juan Roman has made 290 appearances in his four years with Wichita. Always really a backup outfielder, he has only once made more than 100 appearances in a season. He had just 228 AB’s during 2043, but managed nine home runs, 22 RBI and scored 26 times. Starting just three games and having seven appearances in the outfield with a +0.2 ZR in left or right field he was looking for a rise from the minimum $500K to $1,250,00.

Decision: Roman awarded a salary of $650,000

25-yr-old RF Hector Garza has made 313 appearances in his four years in Wichita, but has always had someone better than him shutting him out of a regular start in right. First it was Alex Ramirez and now it’s Luis Maldonado, that said Garza is a solid right fielder and rarely lets the team down when he is called upon. Little used in 2043, he made 102 appearances in RF during 2042 posting a +5.0 ZR. He was asking for a salary of $1,195,000.

Decision: Garza awarded a salary of $850,000

26-yr-old CF Jorge Rincon has made 684 appearances for Wichita in six seasons with the team. A speedster at the top of the line-up he stole a career-high 45 bases last season, taking his BBA career total to 148. His three regular season homers doubled his career total and his 75 runs scored as well as 52 walks were career highs. He also collected the JL Diamond Glove award at CF for 2043, his first individual award, posting a +12.9 ZR. He was demanding a salary of $1,420,250.

Decision: Rincon was awarded a salary of $1,300,000.

So, there you have it four arbitration cases against the whole of our backup outfield. We won all four, saving close to $1.5 million on the players demands. Rincon may be the only one to see significant time in the field during 2044 and if the guys at Albuquerque develop as expected, he may be the only one remaining at the end of 2044.

The Aviators are going to be interesting in a couple of years. Winning the AAA title could be huge for player development.
