Trinkets for Aviators

There’s not been many times recently, or indeed in their nine-year history, that Wichita Aviator’s players have featured in the end of season awards, but we did pick up a couple of individual awards in the 2043 round-up.

Duane Whitley Jr

2043 Johnson League Yogi Zimmer Diamond Glove Award (1B)

A well-deserved award for a player in the twilight of his career. 32-yr-old Duane has completed five years at first base for Wichita, never playing less than 120 games, and has been the model of consistency. This year he played 154 games there and posted a ZR of +11.0, a efficiency of 1.064 and a range of 10.59 in the 1346 innings he played at First during the regular season. When you add to that his 29 home runs, 89 RBI, 70 runs scored & 46 walks taken, it really does feel as if he’s worth more than his 2.1 WAR posted. Unfortunately he could well be approaching his final year in Wichita as his $14 million/year contract expires at the end of 2044 and a lot of analysts are predicting that the Aviators may well be unwilling to spend that sort of money extending a 33-yr-old despite having no-one with that sort of defensive capability within the franchise as a replacement.

Jorge Rincon

2043 Johnson League Yogi Zimmer Diamond Glove Award (CF)

26-yr-old Jorge broke into the Aviators side six years ago and established himself as their first-choice centre fielder a couple of years later. Last year he had a poor start to the season, both with the bat and in the field, and subsequently lost his place in the starting line-up for most of the season, playing only 61 times in the centre of the outfield. At the end of 2042 he had regained his place and never looked back this year. Playing 158 times in CF he managed a +12.9 ZR, a 1.035 eff and a range of 3.16 in 1424 innings at the position. He Is entering the final year of his contract worth $1.3m but is expected to give way to top prospect Chris Jenkins during 2044 or 45. Luckily for Jorge though he is a plus-plus defensive player all across the outfield so can expect to remain at the club past 2044.
