Second straight Opening Day win
Wednesday, 1st April 2043, Wichita Globe: Last year it was the sadly injured Lane Aldridge that saw the Aviators home to a 4-0 Opening Day win against the Cougars, this year it was a run fest, watched by 39,982, where young bullpen arm Orlando Sanchez picked up the win. The runs certainly flew everywhere as Boise scored two off new Aviators starter Mauro Flores in the top of the first before Luis Alvarez, in his first game as the ‘regular’ DH hit a 3-run homer in his first AB in the bottom half of the innings. The Spuds tied it up at three in the top of the second with the game’s third homer. The fans didn’t have to wait long for another souvenir as Alvarez hit his second 3-run shot of the game in the bottom of the second. The fans in the right-centre bleachers started a conga as both balls landed there.
Duane Whitley Jr landed the third Aviators’ homer, a 2-run effort, over the right-centre field wall and Wichita led 8-3. When Boise added their third homer in the top of the fourth, a 2-run shot, it marked the end of Flores and Sanchez come in to replace him. Boise drew as close as 8-7 when Sanchez coughed up Spud’s fourth homer in the fifth, but the power went on. Bottom of the fifth and Luis Maldonado hit a two-run shot, Aviators fourth homer and the game’s eighth, to make the score 10-7. Clive Timberlake then actually crossed the plate with a non-=homer run as Aviators went into the sixth 11-7 up.
Jesus Arce came in for his Wichita debut and promptly allowed a walk, triple and single to close the gap to 11-9. We weren’t finished with the long ball though, bottom of the sixth Alvarez stepped into the batter’s box and hit his third homer of the game 380’ just the right side of the rightfield foul pole. Three homers and seven RBI for the new DH, that ninth homer for the game finished the scoring. Opening Day remained lucky for Aviators under GM Laverick
