Aviators start 2042 with a shutout

There’s life in Wichita yet, faced with an eight-game road trip to start the new season, Aviators get through the first leg of it with a 3-2 record.

Games 1 & 2: @Charlotte

First game of the series was Opening Day for the 2042 BBA season and it ended up a fantastic game for Wichita. Jorge Rincon had a bitter/sweet first two AB’s of the season, he got an infield hit leading off the game and got picked off the base and his second time up he got on with a bunt for a hit and promptly got caught stealing. ’John John’ Bowen opened the season scoring with a 375ft solo long ball over the LF fence in the top of the third and successive doubles from Matt Chambers & ’Cadillac’ Gouzzie in the fourth helped Aviators to two more runs. That was virtually all she wrote then for the Cougars home opener, Juan Roman added a solo shot over the right field wall for the fourth & final run. Charlotte got just three hits from the third to the end of the game on the way to being outhit 8-6, wasting Keijo Reini’s 12 strikeout night.
Game 2 had the Cougar’s fans with their heads in their hands again when a single from Jim Abernathy drove home Bowen in the top of the fourth. The mood lightened as two hits tied it up in the sixth and a 2-run shot in the bottom of the seventh had the home fans celebrating. It wasn’t to be though, ‘Casdillac’ hit a solo home to bring the Aviators to within one in the eighth before ’Mirror’ Ramirez hit a 2-run homer with two out in the top of the ninth to seal a one-run win for Wichita. Cougars threatened in the final half innings but couldn’t get the tying run home.

Games 3, 4 & 5: @Phoenix

Game one of the series had the small pocket of Wichita fans believing in Heaven. Aviators scrambled a run in the first, took advantage of three walks and a hit-by-pitch to add two more runs in the third, used a Hector Garza leadoff triple to add their fourth run in the fourth and ‘Cadillac’s second homer of 2042, a 2-run shot, in the fifth made it 6-0. Duane Whitley, Jr bucked up a miserable start to the season for him with a solo homer in the top of the seventh. Talons scored one in the bottom of the innings, but the Wichita fans just laughed, 7-1, we’re on the way to another convincing win. In the bottom of the eighth Abe Colbert, Jr & Orlando Sanchez made a complete hash of it, a single and walk plus a stolen base and an error made it 7-2 with a runner at third. A ground-out enabled him to come home for 7-3. Two walks by Sanchez and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with two out, Norihisa Yokoyama steeped into the batter’s box and sent the 3-1 pitch over the fences for a Grand Slam and the game tying run ! Both teams were seemingly stunned by the change of fortunes and we went all the way to the bottom of the 12th with no further scoring. Talons snapped the 7-7 tie then with a two-run walk-off home run by Yokoyama again to seal the win and a personal tally of 3-6 with 7 RBI.
Game two had Aviators starting fast again as a Juan Roman double drove in the game’s first two runs in the top of the first, but Duane Coutts gave up three hits in the bottom half and tied the game at two. It wasn’t Coutts night, his control was right off and after a 2-run shot off him in the bottom of the third to make it 5-2 Phoenix, he was hooked for Adam Simons. Simons was shaky too, walks galore and a run in the fifth saw him give way to Orlando Sanchez after he walked another batter in the sixth. Sanchez promptly gave up a double and Talon’s 7th run. That was that then as Aviators went down to their second straight loss in Phoenix.
The final game of the series saw Wichita really make a statement. In the top of the second Aviators sent 11 to the plate, managed 7 hits and saw off two Talons’ pitchers. Most importantly though they scored seven times to take a commanding lead. It was 8-0 after three and Phoenix heads were down, Aviators added the ninth after six. In the seventh Herve Billy led off as a pinch hitter for his first Wichita AB and slipped it through the field for a single. Four batters later, Garza drove him home for the tenth Wichita run. Talons scored the game’s final run in the bottom of the ninth, Yokoyama’s third homer of the series, but it hardly mattered as Wichita won 10-1, outhitting Phoenix 16-5.
