One final move
As I came out of Seventh Wonder ball park for the final time I was mobbed by journalists seeking a story. I’m not sure I had one to give. True I wasn’t leaving for my expected destination and I was leaving the UMEBA for the final time but that was hardly a headline story. Cairo had massively underperformed this year and in all honesty they were probably glad to be shot of me.
No, the story they wanted was how I was going to turn to Wichita franchise around. Seven years since the Aviators burst into life and not a winning season to be seen. Their 79-83 season in 2039 was the closest they’ve ever come to a .500 season. Most of the journalists appeared to all be Americans, and mostly from Wichita or Kansas area newspapers.
”When will you get a win in Wichita?”
”Whose futures in doubt?”
when are you going to improve the standard of the wieners?”
when are you leaving us?”
All the questions were being thrown at me in a cacophony of sound from the expectant throng. I held my hand up and eventually they got the message and fell silent.
“I haven’t even looked at the Wichita roster yet and won’t do until I report for the job at the weekend, until then I’m on holiday and won’t be doing anything about anything/anyone.”
”when will you begin your 2042 planning?”
“By the time I get to Wichita the post season will be starting so I’ll be taking all the staff and players over the nearest bar to watch that unfold. If we haven’t got a plan after that we might just not bother.”
”Are you leaving the Aviators soon?
“That’s a bit uncalled for ! I’ve only just arrived, or technically, closer to the truth I haven’t even arrived yet.”
”Your reputation precedes you, we all know you’ll be leaving us soon for your next assignment”
“That’s just where you’re wrong. Commissioner Rectenwald has made it quite clear to me that the BBA won’t stand any more franchise hopping by me. Any more he says and I’ll be in a permanent retirement home in some Godforsaken hole. Besides three years in the Cairo desert has made me realise just how good it is in the BBA.
