2039.07 Mass Exodus of position players

Post by felipe » Sat Aug 31, 2019 6:21 am

The 2040 Wichita Aviators will be much different than the 2039 Aviators; seven position players' (from the 27 man roster), contracts expired at the 2039 season's conclusion, and the Aviators are rumoured to not be bringing back even one. (Of course, with their cumulative WAR of 0.2, its not hard to understand why).

Thirty-three year old Canadian catcher, Don Logan, is the most valuable of the bunch, posting a 1.8 WAR in 2039; But the player is declining, is a bit of a jerk and plays indifferent defence, so its unlikely that the Wichita club will even earn a supplemental pick for him as its unlikely he will get offered a big league contract from a competitor. After all, he received no offers other than Wichita's, after a 2038 in which he posted a 3.8 WAR. Then again, two new expansion clubs that begin play in 2040, may be desperate for a short term catcher.

Thirty-three year old corner infielder, Cris Limon, is the only other positive WAR contributor to be leaving the club. Limon hits homers and he steals bases, but he hit a paltry .210, and his defence continues to slip. But it is conceivable that he will latch onto another club for 2040.

Thirty-four year old, Mark Sturdivant, had a great 5/6 of the season for the Aviators when asked to play right-field against lefties, hitting an .802 OPS, but when asked to branch out, and play everyday for the final month of September, is defence suffered and his hitting against righties was abjectly poor, (.591 OPS). Of course, he only played the final month everyday, because he complained about not playing everyday.

Thirty-four year old, Sergio Cordova, joined the Aviators on a one year deal to play left field against lefties, and was mildly disappointing, with a .761 OPS and a -1 Zone Rating.

Free swinging, Glenn Gorman, was handed a full time job by the Aviators by June, and he ran with it, posting 25 homeruns and a .745 OPS. Unfortunately, Gorman proved that he was ideally suited to only facing lefties, and his inability to field, ultimately made him expendable. Of course, if Gorman was a slick fielder at short or center with that bat, he'd likely still be an Aviator...of course, he'd probably still be at Long Beach if that was the case. Wichita released him outright, to make sure that they didn't offer him arbitration by mistake.

Thirty year old Calvin Clohessey was handed the starting centerfielder job against lefties, and ultimately disappointed. He didn't hit for much, and his defending was not great either. Presented with a September chance to fill in at second base, he performed poorly there too. Clohessey was released outright by the Aviators; again to ensure that he wasn't offered arbitration. Clohessey should still be able to help a big league club in a utility role.

Twenty nine year old, Gary Schneider, had a poor 2039, after posting two solid campaigns for Boise and Wichita in 2037 and 2038 respectively. Schneider was picked up on a whim as he sat in the free agency bin after the season had started, to serve the Aviators as needed. Schneider struggled in a part time role, and never really got going. He is expected to find a home in 2040 for someone at second or third base. He is a proven, decent, if not sexy, big league regular.

The Aviators plan to fill all of these holes, with prospects from their minor leagues in 2040.
