2037.04 On a Higher Plane...Ammy draft recap

The Wichita Aviators had a pretty sweet draft...if you igniore the face that they couldn't afford the outrageous salary demands of their first round, (second overall) pick, stud pitcher, Zac Johnson.

"I kinda went overboard on the international amateur guys this season," admitted the Genius, "So when it came time to sign Johnson, the owner wouldn't give up the cash...especially because I signed some of the other draft picks first. Oh well."

Second round pick, Wilson Villaneuva, struggled in winter and A ball, but still looks a good big league center-field prospect.

Third round pick, Jose Carlos Flores, did well in A ball, but struggled in the winter league. But he looks like a future big league starting first baseman.

The other third round pick, center-fielder, Jorge Rincon, didn't do all that well in AA or winter league, and projects as a good fielding, light hitting, fourth or fifth big league outfielder.

Fourth rd pick, Jim Unknown, did ok in AA and Winter league, getting reps at shortstop and second base. Unknown has great positional flexibility and looks certain to make the Big leagues in some sort of role, although his ceiling is unknown at this point.

Fifth rd pick, Kevin Morris, struggled in Single A and winter league, but also looks a future big leaguer thanks to his positional flexibility.

Sixth rd pick, catcher Leon Corchero, in what is becoming a familiar refrain, struggled in Single A and winter league, but would seem to be destined to play catcher for a big league team that doesn't rate defense too highly at catcher.

Seventh rd pick, Jeff Kirk, projects as yet another big league utility player - who again, struggled in his intro to pro ball.

Tenth rd pick, Luis Martinez, looks like a future back up big league outfielder.

Any other player from this draft will have to really develop unexpectedly to make it to the Bigs, as a host of wartish pitchers closed up the rest of the draft.
