Welcome to the Class of ‘43

Wichita, for the second year running leaned towards an organisational draft rather than a developmental draft. Having inherited virtually nothing in the farm, the management have since gone with using it’s top picks to flesh out the top end of the farm with players who can make Double-A & A ball at least competitive and maybe if they really take to it might make the one or two improvements they need to reach the BBA. We are satisfied that we have completed this task to the best of our ability and starting in 2044 we will be looking for developmental projects.

Our signed picks from the first five rounds

Round 1, 3rd overall: 21-yr-old P Josh Hayworth. josh was drafted out of the Burger King college and again is near BBA ready already. He has an elite fastball, topping out at around 98-100 mph, with pretty decent curveball and slider along with a changeup that could do with improvement. He will start in Double-A Columbus and the coaches will go hard at work on this control, on of the main things that is keeping him off the BBA roster at the moment. In college, he pitched 150 innings, striking out 201 batters while only giving up 15 homers, the coaches are frowning on his 64 walks though.

Round 2, 39th overall: 22-yr-old P Joe Jones. Joe was drafted out of the Microsoft X-Sox and should have enough skills at the moment to do well in Double-A. He definitely needs some good luck to compete with the Hayworths, Sackets and Guerreros of the organisation. He was picked mainly for his elite Knuckleball given the success that Aviators’ Colbert, Jr has had in his career with the pitch. In his one season at Microsoft, he pitched best part of 45 innings, striking out 57 batters and only allowing seven homers and 17 walks. He will start in the rotation at Columbus, just behind Hayworth, where coaches will be focusing on getting the changeup and slider up to scratch as well as adding a bit of zip to his pitches, keeping the batters guessing as the movement through the air improves.

Round 3, 81st overall: 18-yr-old Jamie Davis. Unfortunately it looks as though Jamie won’t be joining us. He talked to him pre-draft and he said he was happy to sign up and wasn’t greedy, just happy to look forward to a BBA career. Now he’s demanding nearly $3 million over slot, and the agreement is that he’s not worth that. So, we’ve offered him a $1 million ‘take it or leave it’ deal and the ball is now firmly in his court.

Round 4, 117th overall: 18-yr-old 3B Steve Kasper. Steve was drafted out of IBM high school where his triple slash was .295/.368/.558 with a .986 OPS over 23 games there. In his final year there, the Front Office were pleased with his +5.5 ZR at 3B and his 1.099 def eff. He is already in Rookie ball at Anchorage and in his first five games there he has hit one homer and driven in five runs; he’s also shown his patience at the plate by working six walks.

Round 5, 149th overall: 21-yr-old P Ken Gallagher. Ken was drafted out of Staples college where in 39 games he recorded 25 saves and struck out 72 batters in 43 innings pitched. He gave up three homers and 19 walks during that time. With elite fastball and curveball pitches he is viewed as the Aviators’ stopper of the future, but with need to work on his pitches’ movement and his ability to locate them if he is to fulfil that. In his first two pro games in Anchorage he has a win and a save, allowing one run in 3.2 innings pitched.
