2054-0006: Talons Future HOFer Steven Collins III Injured in Vegas, Former VAN Star Rashardo Menne III to Get the Call

Las Vegas, NV--

It was the 13th inning of a hard-fought game between the Talons and Hustlers, one of the more well-known geographical and divisional rivalries in the BBA. The Talons had already taken the lead off a sac fly that scored Manoell Whanon, and veteran 3B Steven Collins III was up at the plate with two runners on base. Even the crowd in Vegas knew that this could be a special moment for the future Hall of Famer, who recently launched his 300th home run a few days earlier.

But an errant slider from Vegas lefty Bob Coutts dove down and in and caught Collins' foot. The crowd let out a gasp as the 37-year-old Phoenix 3B hopped around, while the normally competent Coutts, in only his second game of the season, looked up toward the sky in disappointment as Hustlers catcher Pepe Prieto checked on the batter. Collins limped toward the dugout and was replaced by a pinch runner, and later x-rays showed that he had suffered a hairline fracture in his metatarsal, sidelining him for up to three weeks.

After the game, Collins was fine with what happened. "I've been around this league and this division for a long time. Even played for Vegas for a bit. And one thing I've learned is that there is always a heightened intensity when you play the Hustlers. Maybe it's an evil empire thing, who knows. But everyone brings their A game, and the Talons certainly did tonight," he said. "Coutts is a good lefty but that slider got away from him. No hard feelings, it's baseball."

"I wonder who's gonna replace me on the roster, I bet it will be a Surprise," Collins said with a wink.

Speaking of the Talons AAA club, it was no surprise when the Talons announced that former Mounties star Rashardo Menne III would be reporting to Phoenix as Collins is placed on the injured list. Menne, who was a young star with Vancouver in the 2040's and ended up compiling 29 WAR in his BBA career, is currently hitting .322/.421/.389 with 13 stolen bases for the Surprise Talons.

"So I guess this is why us old guys stick around in the minors, huh? Never know when you'll get another chance!" Menne said.
