2047-0009: Talons PEN IS Mightier
Phoenix, AZ--
The Talons don't have much to be proud of these days. They have very famously missed the playoffs in aggrivating fashion the past few years. They have the 32nd ranked farm system. They are already over the cap by $12 million next season. They have virtually no offense. They Talons also have a famously obtuse, reclusive, and cranky GM.
But they DO have a good bullpen. Maybe the best, in fact. Maybe.
Recently, the Jacksonville Hurricanes, an objectively better team than the Talons in virtually every way, posted a Team News article (another thing the Talons are famously bad at doing) regarding the strength of their bullpen corps. And, yes, the article does make a good point. The club's relievers, as a group, posess the best bullpen ERA in the JL. But is ERA everything?
To find out, the newly re-instated Talons Electronic Media And Forum Posting Department decided to compare the bullpen staffs of both the Talons and Hurricanes. They opened the OOTP program (only 39.95, every single year) and sorted the pitching staffs by using the split "as reliever/substitution" and arranged by innings pitched. For all the nerds out there who worship WAR, it is pretty apparent that the Talons bullpen WAR of 7 is quite a bit better than the Hurricanes aggregate mark of 3.2. But that can be influenced by the amount of innings the Talons' pen has logged. Even so, the comparison is more stark if you look at the tables, courtesy of Microsoft Paint and its "crop" function:
Jax Pen:
Talons Pen:
Or, maybe it isn't as clear as the TEMAFPD had hoped. Those bullpens are pretty close. Is ERA the answer to compare them? Is WAR? FIP even??
It's clear that Jax has the better team and will go far this season, while the Talons will likely be eliminated by game 161 as usual. But does Phoenix have the upper hand here, in just this area?? You be the judge!
(Plus, we just couldn't resist the possibilities of that article headline!)

Your bullpen is quite awesome, but you gotta wait for the other shoe to drop with Vallette.

Regardless of who has the better bullpen, you had the better headline!
