Every marketing concern is always looking for ways to entice the next generation. After all, if all of your customers die off, so does your company. And baseball teams are no different.
Teams live and die by their fans, and the revenue they bring. The Phoenix metro area has a population of millions of people, but that means nothing if the turnstiles don't, well, turn.
So, the Talons are always looking for new ways to engage fans, and attract new ones. Like many capitalist enterprises, this involves trying to appear "hip" or "cool" to the younger demographics. Many times, these attempts are at best cringeworthy, and often insulting to the very people they are trying to reach. And so we come to the latest example of such an attempt, the Talons 1st Annual Meme Contest.
"Hey, fellow kids!" the ad copy ran. "Baseball is cool again, and it's time to head on down to the old ballpark for some hot times in the big city! But before the season begins, it's time to crack upen a red bull or three, fire up your tablets, open up photoshop, and get to work for some free Talons swag!"
"Just make your most totally awesome Talons Meme and email it to our marketing office! Memes are cool, and so are the Talons and so is baseball! And all the cool kids this year are going to be dripping in Talons swag. Just get those Memes submitted, and we'll pick the hottest ones and feature them on our Wordpress Blog! And the winners will get a new pair of Talons branded New Balance sneakers!"
The club then offered up an example of what they are looking for. Who will win? What kind of memes will Talons fans come up with? Stay tuned for the results in the weeks to come!
