Phoenix, AZ--
Tony Hernandez
Where did he come from?
The Talons signed Tony Hernandez to a 2 year, $11 million contract during spring training 2044. The Talons were looking for some more offense after having a subpar year in that regard in 2043. The thought was that Hernadez would make a good hitter versus RHP, with Takeichi Ohayashi playing against LHP. Hernandez' first three seasons with San Antonio were very good, however he had not matched that performance in his subsequent arbitration years.
How did he do this season?
This was a case of a team throwing money at a bat, any bat, and not adequately solving the problem. Hernendez never kept up his production after a good April, and eventually was relegated to bench duty as superior defender and baserunner Ohayashi regained his full time role at 1B. In fact, Hernandez only gained 51 at bats from June 1st onward, as the club realized it had flubbed the signing and limited his appearances.
What's going to happen to him?
Hernandez has a $6 million Team Option for 2045 that will not be picked up. Hernandez was a failure at his assigned task, however the bigger failure was the franchise that signed him, foolishly thinking he was up to it.
