The Talons were pretty excited to watch the highest rated (75) player fall to them at ninth overall.

Having set up their draft list of exactly one player, and then set up the proceedings to "auto" (per the previous team news), the Phoenix front office just happened to log in to the Slack Plus draft board about two minutes before the team at #7 got auto-drafted. And, since the team at #8 also had a list, the Talons knew that there would be three picks made at once. And, with a time stamp of "2020-06-15 13:00 CDT", the deed was done for all three frnachises.

Unbelievably, the one guy the Talons had on their list, C Ichizo Sugiyama, fell to the club at ninth overall, despite having the highest potential OSA rating of anyone in the pool. Whats more, he projects to be an easy sign, saving the Talons potentially millions when it comes to the signing bonus.

The cool thing about Sugiyama, the Talons think, is that he could plausibly play not only catcher, but also second base and likely left field at the major league level. Now yes, he is somewhat of a late bloomer, only catching scouts' eyes a few months ago. But he now projects to have big power, which is something that practically makes him born a Talon. He'll be a project all right, but if the club can get him pointed in the right direction, he would be a suitable replacement for current Talons catcher Sang Duk Sim.

Sim, after a 3.2 WAR season in the first year of his contract, is rapidly wearing out his welcome in Phoenix, having been described by snarky fans on Twitter as a #steamingheapofshit. Which coincidentally, is also an apt descriptor for the other 19 Talons draftees, who will all get $1 bonus offers and be told to report to the nearest Greyhound bus station.
