2039-05: Talons Had Money, Offered Some Extensions, Now Have Less Money

Post by jiminyhopkins » Thu Jun 27, 2019 3:06 pm

Phoenix, AZ--

The Talons are a loyal bunch, and the recent spate of extensions proves that they are committed to their players, Jean-Luc Lacaze not withstanding. This past offseason, the following players signed contract extensions with the club:

Cisco Arreola was brought over midseason 2038 and immediately helped the franchise work toward its third playoff series in 4 years. He quickly took over the clubhouse and established himself as the leader. The Talons decided to extend him for three more seasons, with $11.9 mil in 2039 and 40, as well as a Team Option for $12.9 mil in 2041. Not bad for a future hall of famer!

Bartolo Ortiz and the Talons had been talking all season long. As opening day 2038 had neared, Ortiz's agents had been talking about a 9 figure deal, which was immediately balked at by the club. Over the course of the season, his demands fell, and by the time November rolled around and free agency was pending, Ortiz overruled his agents and signed a 6 year deal to keep him in Phoenix through age 30, for a total of just over $70 million. One of the best lefty power hitters in the game with over 200 career HR at age 25, its easy to imagine what heights he could reach when its all over.

Jose Trujillo is another popular longtime Talon, and has consistently led the staff for over six seasons now. A leader in the clubhouse, he is a respected veteran who is loved by fans and players alike. Thanks to his three year, $35 million extension, Trujillo looks to end his career with the Talons, hopefully on a high note that allows the club to pick up the year 3 Team Option.

Alexandre Renard may not be the name most were expecting, but when he agreed to take his 2039 arb figure of 2 mil and duplicate that over the next three seasons, the Talons said why not. He's been used as a starter and a reliever, and has the skills to be a closer as well if necessary. Basically an all around nice guy who has been with the franchise since draft day 2029, Renard would rather trust the comforts of home than try for free agency, and the club has rewarded his loyalty.
