Phoenix, AZ--
So what's gone well for the Talons so far in 2038? Plenty.
For some reason, Charlie Iron-Knife is leading the JL in ERA. Or he would, if he had a few more innings to qualify. Now sitting at 4-0 with a 0.79 ERA, and more importantly a decent walk to strikeout ratio, the rookie pitcher is off to a great start, and becoming the epitome of a post-hype sleeper. He's a knuckleballer, so most assuredly when the correction comes, it will be ugly. But in the meantime, he's riding the wave and contributing to the Talons' 29-15 record, tied for best in the BBA.
And once again, RF Thad Meyer is off to another hot start and putting up early MVP numbers, just like last season. With a blistering 1.059 OPS, <eyer is playing above his ratings would suggest, and the Talons will take it. The more important consideration is who will pick up the slack when Meyer regresses to his normal 4 to 5 WAR self.
And who would have thought that Dillon Young would be tied for the league lead with 13 saves? Young was signed to a discount deal in order to bridge the gap to when closer prospect Julio Cuevas was ready to take over. But Young has been so good, Cuevas was sent back to AAA to get regular innings and save opps. The Talons had originally planned to trade the veteran at the deadline, but now they are considering picking up his 2039 option.
Speaking of trades, Bartolo Ortiz might have to be traded. No, not everything has gone well for the club so far this year. Ortiz still wants a huge nine figure deal. But he still can't seem to understand that he plays for the Talons, who have half a dozen elite DH condidates in their system. In other words, they need him, but not enough to lay out 20 mil per season. Yes, he's a potential 50 homer player and blah blah blah, but after the LaLoosh contract, the club just can't spend that much on a guy who can't play the field.
Guess that's it for the update. Sorry for no witticisms or droll humour. We've kind of lost interest for the time being. Might even have to enact another Team News Boycott. We'll see!
GO Talons!

Love the headline.
I think you should go all the way and boycott the boycott.
