2038-05: So do the Talons Have a Closer or What?

Post by jiminyhopkins » Wed Mar 13, 2019 12:11 pm

Phoenix, AZ --

In allowing VODAK to seek his fortunes elsewhere, the Talons opened up a big hole in their bullpen, which was one of the better relief corps in the JL last season. Not to worry, they said, because we got this neato relief prospect just waiting to put out some fires. Yup, Julio Cuevas will just slide right in and be the closer.

Yeah, Cuevas is very good and will have a long career with many saves. He has quickly become a fan favorite and a great teammate. But is he ready for the big time at 21 years old, with a whole 24 big league innings to his credit? Closing in the BBA is no spring picnic, and many are the times that a talented young arm has been beaten down by inexperience.

The Talons, realizing this, made a late free agent signing this past week, their only major contract of the offseason. Veteran closer Dillon Young was signed to a deal that pays him $3 million this season, with a $4 million team option for 2039. A team official commented: "Acquiring a quality veteran like Young is precisely what our bullpen needed. He will provide experience and stability as we transition from Bakitski to Cuevas. Plus, he could be traded later on if conditions warrant."
