2038-03: Talons, Bartolo Ortiz Reportedly Far Apart in Early Extension Talks

A source familiar to negotiations between RF Bartolo Ortiz and the Talons reports that the two sides are quite far apart as preliminary extension discussions get underway.

Ortiz's camp was reportedly not impressed with the Talons' initial offer, which was a 6 year deal approaching $80 million in total compensation. Agents for the power hitting right fielder are looking for an offer in the nine figure range. It's very early of course, as Ortiz has his final arbitration year to play out in 2038. But some are wondering if this could be an early sign of contention between the slugger and the franchise.

Recently on Talons talk radio, a pundit observed thus: "Ortiz is a great player, make no mistake. But he can't play the field. He's a DH. In the BBA. I'm pretty sure there are quite a few DH's who would love to play in Phoenix," the talk radio sports personality observed. "I mean, they have a guy, Ron Mosley, who could step in and hit 35-40 bombs as a DH right now. Is Bartolo overplaying his hand?"

It remains to be seen if these early talks are just an early bump in the road, or a sign of things to come. Could Ortiz be traded? The club likely does not want another situation like with VODAK Bakitski, where extension talks broke down early, the club couldn't deal him, and he walked as a free agent.
