Phoenix, AZ--
The Maricopa County Sherriff's Office announced today that they have opened an investigation regarding alleged underage drinking in the Talons' clubhouse.
A spokesman for the Sherriff's Office had this to say: "After the game this past September 10th, Phoenix Talons center fielder Weaver Ripley was quoted on record by local media about partaking in alcoholic beverages after the game. As Mr. Ripley was aged 20 years and 149 days at the time, we are investigating any underage consumption of alcohol that was alleged to have occured as part of postgame activities in the Talons clubhouse," the spokesman said.
In a postgame recap in the Phoenix Sun Times Post Dispatch, Ripley was quoted as saying "We'll pop the top on a cold one and get back to work tomorrow". The question appears to be what he meant by "cold one", but law enforcement officials seem to believe that the phrase refers to a beer or other chilled alcoholic beverage, such as a wine cooler, premixed margarita, or even a Zima. It is also well known that the Talons frequently have a cooler prepared with such beverages in the clubhouse to be enjoyed after team victories.
The Talons front office has had no official comment on the matter, however a source from within the organization has stated that the Ripley was misquoted. The actual quote is purported to be from Domenic Wyatt, the Talons veteran outfielder and a fan of beverages such as Fosters, a beer from his native Australia.
Public records have indicated that Mr. Ripley and other Talons personnel have been questioned by the Sherriff's Office, but no arrests or citations have been issued.
