2034-18: Talons set record for HR in a game?

Havana, Cuba--

It wasn't exactly a fun day at the ballpark for Sugar Kings fans.

But first, a little history. Back at the end of the 2031 season, the Talons and Sugar Kings came together on a rather notorious trade. Havana sent SP Ignacio Rodriguez and CF/2B Manuel Martinez to the Talons in exchange for SP Feliciano Rafael and CF Abdelwahab Kamade. Phoenix had enjoyed its first .500 season and subsequently made a move to acquire an ace level starter. At the time, I-Rod was a relatively durable pitcher, with the stuff, control, and leadership qualities every team wants in their ace. Meanwhile, Feliciano Rafael had just finished up a 4.70 ERA campaign for the (Short A) Daytona Beach Bikers.

Everyone knows what happened after that. Rafael, well thought of in the Talons system (#73 prospect) but not a world beater, went on to develop into an All Star talent. He is now considered to be an ace, pretty much exactly what the Talons thought they were trading for. Speaking of what the Talons traded for, Ignacio Rodriguez has since become an injury riddled albatross, his ratings a shell of what they once were. In fact, in the nearly 3 seasons since the trade, I-Rod has yet to throw 250 innings for his current club.

So, whenever the Talons face the Sugar Kings, and Rafael in particular, its kind of a big deal. Such as it was last September, when Feliciano stymied the Talons with a complete game three hit shutout. But this year, it was different.

In the game at Havana on August 15th, Phoenix treated Cuban baseball fans to a 15-1 shellacking of the home team. In addition, 11 of those runs were scored off of none other than Rafael, who also gave up 7 Phoenix home runs. The Talons would actually hit 10 dingers in the game, homering in every inning save the 1st and 7th. Talons young sluggers Mario Deortez and Bartolo Ortiz had two shots apiece, while rookie CF Thad Meyer had three home runs of his own. If there is a record for home runs in a game by one team, it would seem to have been set that night. It was an amazing display of prowess from the potent Talon offense, and a small measure of revenge on the Kings for what they have repeatedly called the "I-Rod Swindle".

But they still won the trade.
