Position Battles(Loogey)
Not that kind of loogey
Under normal circumstances, losing two left handed relief pitchers could be a cause of concern. The tandem of Faical 'El Guapo' Engeitado and Hotha Buyoya did a servicable job posting a combined .8 WAR in just under 90 innings. But that's just not production that you want to pay big bucks for. Luckily, Twin Cities has a plethora of lefties available to fill the role. Not lost in the decisions to cut ties with the two veteran pitchers is that two of these incumbent candidates are out of options. Let's take a look at the candidates and how they may fit in the rotation.
Carlos Rocha and Raúl López will return to the staff, though neither could be pigeon holed as a loogy. Lopez is the main lefty in the pen, who gets used in a stopper role to give manager Gerald Brandt a lefty option late in the game. Rocha on the other hand, has reverse splits. So he is more of a long/ middle relief option.
From there, Kerry Pike, Tom Simms, and Carton Hurt are all back end/long relief options. At least one of these pitchers will need to start untill Curt Fields returns from injury mid season. That role will most likely go to Kerry Pike as he had a very solid 2052.
Simms is an interesting case. He is out of options so it's do or die for him. We could stash him in the bullpen as a loogey and spot start him vs lefty heavy lineups. But outside of that, his value is minimal without the ability to yo-yo him back and forth to the minors as depth.
Carlton Hurt had a good 2051 before falling victim to Twin Cities inferior defense in 2051. This is where roster building is important. His 90 mph sinker doesn't mesh with the current makeup of the team. So while he may be on par with some of these other options, he will never perform well. Luckily he has an option so if need be, we can call him up and shuffle our lineup to get the most out of him.
Last on our list is former first round pick Tokugawa Yamashita. Tukugawa has been trending up the teams internal depth chart for the past few seasons and he could be in line for a substaintial role in this 2053 team. He is a high movement lefty with improving control problem. He seems to be getting better with every new chance given. He has reverse splits, so he might actually compete with Pike and Jerry Stone for a backend rotation spot.
