2051.13 Sky is the Limit

Sky is the Limit Image Can Felix Ramos walk the River Monsters to a Brewster?

While there were two big names that sat atop the BBA draft board, one seemed to shine brighter than the other. It was a mere formality that the River Monsters would select Félix 'Sky' Ramos with the number one overall pick. On Wednesday night, they did just that.

While maybe not the five tool SS/CF that Twin Cities had envisioned with the most coveted pick in the sport, Ramos is truly a unique and special player with skills that are off the charts. The most obvious is his walk rate. Ramos is essentially the modern day Mark Simpson. A Zimmer caliber first baseman who will hit .280-.290, 30 doubles, 20-25 homers and walk 120-130 times a season. Unlike Simpson, Ramos has decent speed as well. A lot of his doubles will turn into triples and many walks will turn into doubles.

Despite being listed as a 2B and actually playing well there last season, Twin Cities does not plan on him ever manning the keystone. The franchise generally likes to move players left on the spectrum to improve defense. So while he could get some spring reps and be an option at 3rd base, first base is much more likely for the longhaul.

Ramos' ETA is now. He is ready to go and the River Monsters are trying to make a statement this season. Once negotiations begin, Twin Cities is expected to offer him more then what he wants and get him in uniform right away. It's very likely he will start off in AAA to get a quick how to on 1B, a position he has never played. Though he might just come right to the BBA and DH the rest of the season, saving the 1B training for next spring.

What was once an anemic offense is quickly becoming a good one. Ramos will be the superstar surrounded by a very deep and versatile "next man up" offense. Only time will tell if Ramos can lead Twin Cities to their first ever Brewster. But if the Mark Simpson parallel holds true, he'll have about 20 years to do it.
