42.13 TWC As Starters continue to struggle, River Monsters facing toughest test of the season

The Cinderella Season for the River Monsters could be hitting midnight....

After starting the month tied with Yellow Springs, the team limped along through July, hanging on the third Heartland spot, but steadily losing ground to Yellow Springs and untouchable Louisville while Chicago has closed in from the 4th spot.

Twin Cities did split series with Omaha, California and Yellow Springs, but was swept by surging Chicago. The team finished July by going into Vancouver and losing a 4 games 3 games to 1.

August is looking looking to be brutal grind, starting the month with a 4 game series against Louisville, then going to 4th placed Chicago and finishing with yet another series at Yellow Springs over the next two weeks. Chicago has moved within 5 games of the River Monsters and there's serious concern that lead could evaporate by mid-August.

Not wanting to mortgage the future for a top end Starter, Twin Cities did make a deal for Knud Zietler, sending San Fernando an intriguing starter pitching prospect in Ramon Guerrero.

Knud struggled in his first two starts, losing games to Omaha and Vancouver, giving up 9 earned runs over 9.2 innings. However, Zietler did settle down for his third Twin Cities start, winning his first River Monster game ironically against his former Team, San Fernando, earning player of the game honors.

The struggling Twin Cities starting pitching staff will be key in the coming weeks, just keeping games close to give the #2 Frick League offense a chance and hand over games to the bullpen which has performed well this season. However, the offense slipped a bit recently, getting shut out three times in the last week... leading to the slow slide in the Heartland with Chicago bearing down for the third Frick League Wild Card spot.

With 2 months left in the Season, the following 2 weeks will be key for Twin Cities to maintain position for their first Play Off Appearance in 6 seasons.

I wouldn’t worry too much, Scott. We’re the Sox, after all ...
