42.06 TWC - Wareham doing Wareham things...
https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... 31047.html
Season Stats - 22 Games - 19 Runs - .208 BA / .450 OBP / .840 OPS / 33 Walks-16 Hits-30 K's
"You absolutely just have to ignore the batting average and strike outs... as hard as that is. Fortunately, we've learned to trust the Mark Wareham system... He just creates a different kind of havoc for pitchers. He makes them throw tons of pitches and works the count. And this season, he's doing it at another level from his recent seasons," commented Manager Juan Martinez.
Mark is once again leading the BBA in walks and as unlikely as it is to keep his current pace of 200+ walks, he's on track to break his previous single season walk record of 162 BB's. He's ready to grab the Top 15 Career BB spot (1417 vs 1410) and if he can pull 140+ Walks on the season, he'll likely move into the Top 10 by the end of the season (needs to pass 1517 walks).
The Career Walk leader is the legend, Charles Puckett, with 2198 which is an untouchable number. Mark would need another 7 season after this year with an average of 150 walks per season to even think about reaching that spot. And with Mark being 33 years... Yeah, nope.
On a historical note, of the players in the Top 15 for Walks, 13 are currently in the Hall of Fame. There's a reason that the two remaining players are currently not "Official" Hall of Fame members.
Alfredo Salazar is still an active player, but with a career WAR of 74+ and climbing, he's basically a lock.
And
Alfredo Martinez was inducted this last Off Season...
However, will history look kindly on Mark Wareham's career? There's GMs around the league who outrightly state they don't get the hype, which is fair. He's basically been a singles hitter, who doesn't hit the ball... but also tended to hit 20-30 homers per yer for most of his career. With a current career WAR of about 50, can his talents overcome his shortcomings... mainly strikeouts. His 1,400 career walks is eclipsed by his almost 1,700 K's. But unlike the Career Walk Record, Wareham has no chance of reaching the career Strike Out mark of 2,837 held by Valeri Kharlamov... but we're sure Mark'll give it the college try.

I tried to sign him to a 1 year deal this winter and pair him with wie at the top of the lineup. Would be a lot of "men on 1st and 2nd with nobody out to start the game" scenarios with that pair

The amazing thing was that as of a week or so ago, he was playing dazzling shortstop.
I've kind of ragged on him lately, but he's proving me wrong.

lol... I've been doing a defensive sub late in close games with leads. Putting in Juan Manual at SS and moving Wareham to 2nd. Arredondo has been struggling hitting since coming back from injury, so I'm not really losing anything offensively. But if Arredondo gets back going, I'll have to rethink it.

Wareham's numbers at short are better than anything he's seen since 2035. Maybe he's got a new girlfriend or something, but the glove is working.

A guy like Wareham at this stage is very strange.... Is there a case in real life (I know this isn't real life) but could you imagine a guy who can't make much contact, and has little power still left, just up there drawing walks like crazy? It would be one thing if he had high contact and fouled off good pitches. But seems to me pitchers would just throw him meat and dare him to hit it.

I think he was using a concrete glove in Chicago last season: 26 errors and a -6.4 ZR. The groundball pitchers on my staff pitched together and bought him a nice farewell fruit basket ...

I love this look at Wareham. It is enjoyable getting an understanding of some BBA players. I also love the focus on the career walks leaders. And Wareham has a career high OBP this year so far!
And I just noticed that he's stolen at least 80 bases in a season twice in his career. That would be an interesting thing to look at. Not only the career steals leaders in the BBA, but if the steals trend is decreasing just like it is in MLB?

about 10-12 seasons ago the steal rate spiked stupid high in the BBA.johnd2442 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 12, 2020 11:10 amI love this look at Wareham. He also had a 10 speed back then too. He’s come down always from that since thenusnspecialist wrote: ↑Sun Apr 12, 2020 12:13 pmabout 10-12 seasons ago the steal rate spiked stupid high in the BBA.johnd2442 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 12, 2020 11:10 amI love this look at Wareham.
