2038.03 TWC - It's Finalized, Chris Kelly a River Monster for the next 7 Seasons
SP Chris Kelly, Age 25
Career Stats - 51 Wins - 25 Losses, 3.45 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 19.1 WAR
Quietly, the Twin Cities' Front Office and Chris Kelly have reached a deal on a 6 year extension that will keep Kelly in a River Monster Uniform for the next 7 seasons.
"Sure it's a gamble, but Chris is the type of the pitcher that doesn't come around very often. We honestly feel like he's had a string of bad luck recently and in no way believe it'll be a long term trend. We didn't a play any games with options and opt outs, we only wanted him if he was willing to commit for the full 6 years and we wanted to same in return," Commented GM Scott Piccoli.
Contract Terms - 6 Years - $94 Million - $15.7 Million per Year
At only age 25, Kelly will be spending his prime years in the Twin Cities with the current contract running until he's 32 years of age. If Kelly indeed lives up to his potential in the coming seasons, his $15.7 per year will surely be a bargain. Also, by not including any player options, Twin Cities won't have to worry about resigning Kelly in his late 20's where Elite Pitchers tend to command $20 Million +.
A few of the Top Salaries - BBA Pitchers
Arthur Dempster (29) Rockville - $22 Million per year
Mario Flores (31) Las Vegas - $26 Million per year
Cristobal Hernandez (31) Calgary - $22 Million per year
Lawrence LaLoosh (33) Phoenix - $26 Million per year
Dan Cannon (29) Rockville - $18 Million per Year
While Chris Kelly may be rated along side some these pitchers, he's yet to live up to their credentials and his ratings in terms of production. Mainly because of seasons cut short due to injury. However, in those abbreviated seasons, the talent is there and he's shown flashes he could perform up to it. His 2036 season would have projected out to a 8+ WAR and almost 240 strikeouts for a full season.
"Let's just say that we're hoping for a win-win situation for all of a us," replied GM Scott Piccoli, "If all goes well, Kelly will be a looking a huge contract in his early 30's when he's next due to be a free agent. Neither side wants to be looking back at this signing has a huge flop 4-5 years from now."
FYI - I was browsing Top Pitchers in their late 20's/early 30's and ran into Carlos Rodriquez with Calgary.... Age 27, a 75 rating, making $500k/year. WTF? Checked his scouting page... wow, talk about a late bloomer. Just three seasons ago, he had a potential rating of 45, slogging along in the minors. Huge jump from a 30 actual rating to 75. The guy we're all hoping for amIright?

It's a no brainer deal that you had to make. Most of his injuries seem to circle around a herniated disc in this back and not his arm. Normally I'd be gun shy with an injury prone pitcher and that kind of a commitment. But I'm not sure if back issues will age better then arm injuries. Surely it won't be any worse you'd think.

That's a solid contract. Interesting and reasonable for both sides, really. Kelly becomes insured against injury, TWC gets a reasonable deal.
