Jose Garcia
62 Games, 4 wins - 2 losses, 21 Saves (2 BS), 64.1 IP, 1.40 ERA, 0.78 WHIP,

There's a strong belief in some circles that Closer's are overrated.

The Twin Cities Front Office and Coaching Staff would vehemently disagree. In 2034, Felix Alvarado was brought back to be the dominant closer that he was projected to be... He set the bullpen on fire and was never able to put it back together (and throwing salt into the wound that he's rebounded in Yellow Springs this year).

Twin Cities scrambled all last season, trying to patch together a bullpen that wouldn't lose games late... and pretty much failed. In the end, the team stumbled to the finish line was caught from behind by Omaha in the final game of the season.

This season has been dramatically different, it's all due to the addition of one seemingly insignificant free agent signing in the off season.

Jose Garcia...

And this year, Twin Cities is set to play extra games.

"Jose has been a close to the sure thing in the 9th inning as any closer can be... Our only mistake was not recognizing how good he was going to be earlier. If you projected him as the closer for full season, he could be somewhere around 45 saves" commented Manager Juan Williams.

Jesse Stewart was initially handed the closer role after losing his spot in the rotation and while he performed well, it was apparently there was something special going on in the set up role.

Jose Garcia was unstoppable.

Before being handed the Closer spot in Mid-June, Jose had made 34 consecutive appearances giving up 2 runs over approximately 30 innings...

The stats then

ERA - 0.49
WHIP - 0.61
BABIP - .178

Even without the saves on his stat sheet at the time, Jose was deservedly selected for the All Star Game.

Since that time, Jose has shown to be somewhat human and his ERA has ballooned to 1.40. However his WHIP is still an elite 0.78. His control has been great, only giving up 9 walks over 64+ innings.

By far this season has been statistically anomaly in Jose Garcia's career. He struggled mightily in 2034 with San Antonio and typically he's around a 3.50-4.25 for ERA season to season.

Either way, it doesn't matter the Twin Cities staff.

"Don't ask why, just let it ride and keep putting Mr Garcia out there to shut down teams late." commented Scott Piccoli, "It was heart breaking to see how many games the team gave away last season in the late innings. Jose has made all the difference in our playoff run this year. We've seriously turned around our record in one run games."

Jose is currently locked up for another season as a River Monster. If he's able to come anywhere close to this performance in 2036, Jose might be a due for a significant raise in 2037.

Really impressive season for someone who should have (and has had) a lot of trouble against lefties.

also, closers are still overrated

The Save Stat might be overrated, having a guy who can lock down the last inning or two is not.

It’s pretty much the difference between the 2034 and 2035 River Monsters.

I don't know that closers are so much overrated as they are maybe a bit under-used.

This is also the article I didn’t want to write earlier because I was afraid to jinx the last month of the season... lol.

Always cool when the bargain bin signings contribute, especially to that degree
