That was the the Discord PM I awoke to this morning. After a stretch and a yawn, I loaded up the latest file. One of my first targets was to see what Dave Ferrell wanted as an extension. It's a good thing I am not a coffee drinker, cause I surely would have sprayed it all over my laptop. Which would have caused an awkward conversation later on as my wife and I share this laptop.unnamed GM wrote:How the fuck did Rubén Flores sign for so little?
"Honey, why is the Keyboard all sticky?"
"I got excited, it was Ferrell"
"Excited and feral? I can see that"
Anyway, back to baseball. I was expecting Ferrell to be asking something close to the $6 mil he has been making the last three seasons. Hopefully less, like $4-5 mil maybe. I'd probably bite. I was shocked that he only wanted a fraction of that. I almost hit meet demand and submit offer immediately as the deal was much lower than I had anticipated. Since he is 36 years old, I figured I'd try to lower the AAV with a long term deal and just buy him out when he starts throwing BP meatballs with extra cheese. I started low and figured I'd meet him in the middle. Ask for response...
"What? He accepted? Wait, let me try to go lower..... hold on.... I can't, there is nothing lower. A contract so good, he gets a * next his name. I guess I can't say no." Submit offer.
Hmm, didn't Arnold Cantrell want a similar deal? He is old too. I wonder if he'll take this deal also. I'm not even sure I want him back, but at this price point, I can't say no. The buyout is less than a Blair Peyton meal voucher." Ask for response... "He said Yes!" I can't believe I'm so excited to resign this bum.
Alright. Now I'm on a heater. I just want to sign more extensions. I don't care if I want the player or not. Who can I sign next? Randall Gray, I've been trying to lock you up forever. I got you this time buddy. Opens negotiations and see's $54+ million... looks back at player page to see 5/7/5/6/5 ratings... "Nope, not today".... clicks back to salary screen. At this point I'm just clicking on random players. I get to Jerry Stone and the negotiation screen pops up.
"What, why is he willing to negotiate? He isn't even in last year of his contract? F' it, I'm going to lock him up before some patch comes out to fix this. 6 years $60 million? Done! That is less then what Erik Brooks wanted a couple of years ago. Maybe a bit pricey as the 4 extra guaranteed years will take him till age 38. But he is a franchise legend, so even if this ends up bad, I don't really care. At least it will keep him from pitching in the BBA retirement home known as the Surprise Talons with Robert Menzies, Phil Cole, and Ollie Lowry."
After that, I clicked each and every player. Andrés Gonzáles was also willing to negotiate with a year remaining. But unfortunately he wanted a bit more than the league minimum the rest of our bullpen will be making. So it was a hard pass. I believe Alejandro Chávez would sign a similar deal as Ferrell, Cantrell and Ángel Villanueva. But he looks like well toasted Waffle House Raisin Toast.
I guess I can't complain. We are hopefully able to lock up one of our franchise legends for a deal I'm happy with and extend two veteran RP who combined for 2.9 WAR this season for peanuts.
