2052.2 Horrible Signing

Horrible Signing River Monsters continue to count on more than WAR
The Twin Cities River Monsters announced the free agent signing of David 'Horrible' Simpson today. The deal will pay the veteran right fielder a guaranteed $19.2 million over two seasons and could reach as high as $69.6 over 6 years. To the average onlooker, this probably does look like a horrible deal. Simpson will be entering his age 35 season and managed a mere 4.4 WAR combined over the last 2 seasons, his defense is barely playable in RF and the deal is somewhat backloaded.

The River Monsters feel he is an ideal fit for the team though. As we mentioned in our last newsie, Twin Cities is leveraging hard toward OBP and pitches seen per plate appearance. Simpson has career .405 OBP and 4.30 pi/pa mark. This means that the top 3 hitters in the Twin Cities lineup have over .400 career OBP(.451/.435/.405) and over 4 pi/pa(4.99/4.02/4.30). The onslaught doesn't end there though... Eduardo Garcia(4.36), Murray Healy(4.33), Barney Miller(4.28) and Andy Elmer(4.23) are all elite at making pitchers work as well. Not to mention they are going to be stuffing the bases for sluggers such as Long Ball Benson, Bert Cleaver, and Diesel Dave to hopefully clear them with some dingers.

Unlike power and contact numbers, eyes don't really age. So, while gone are the days of Simpson hitting 40 homers, he is probably less likely to be a completely worthless player. Twin Cities plans on doing something that hasn't been done with Simpson much in his career and that is sitting him VS LHP. This should bring a significant increase to his triple slash line compared to last several seasons. We are really banking on at least .280/.400/.500 from him this year.

Another variable in this signing is that he checks the final box on the bingo card for the River Monsters... Prankster. Twin Cities will have optimal team chemistry and staff cohesion next season.. for whatever that is worth.

He did some pretty horrible things in his last stint in TWC.
