I'm not sure why but when Ernest Shaffer hit the big-time here in Minnesota, there were many folks that considered him some sort of uncontrollable hilljack, which seemed weird considering he's from Wisconsin...errr....nevermind (probably a poor defense). It may have had a little something to do with this incident, when he decided to hit on the Commissioner's daughter right before spring training. Then there was this incident when Recte's wife referred to him as a creature; although it does appear that he may have won over the fair Romena.
The season got off to a bit of a rocky start, but here lately Shaffer has been, well, pretty decent. His record now stands at 10-13 (the next pitcher in the wins race for Twin Cities has 5 and is a reliever...). In August he made 7 starts, 4 of them quality starts, including the last 3. He put together a 4.14 ERA and a 4-2 record during that period. He also managed a 1.31 WHIP, 7.5 K/9 and 2.9 K/W ratios. He's actually starting to look like he could become a reasonable 4th starter. I know he's the ace of the staff at the moment, but let's be serious. His ERA on the season is 4.98 and his FIP is 5.23. That's not horrible. In 31 starts, he's put together 17 quality starts. He's finally got his WAR above 0 (.2).
Before being selected by the River Monsters in the EBA expansion draft, Shaffer had pitched in 6 seasons with Amsterdam with varying results.
Monster News:
- After ramming his head into the center field wall, Martin Chavez will miss the rest of the season with Post-Concussion Syndrome. Twin Cities will certainly miss his tremendous and fearless defense in CF.
- The Cheyenne Bulls, Twin Cities Rookie League team, picked up their 10th win of the season to pair with 102 losses....Smokin!

That's weird, I don't have a daughter!
