Warehouse Wire 2047.05: Small's No-No

Post by bcslouck » Tue Jul 06, 2021 6:43 am

Top prospect Dan Small just threw a no-hitter against JLA leading Jacksonville.

After making his first All-Star game, mainly working the first half of the season as a reliever, it took the rookie only 7 starts to throw his first major league no-hitter. He's been nearly as good as a starter in those 7 starts, including the no-hitter, as he was as a reliver.

In 24 appearances, the young Canadian threw 28 innings of 0.96 ERA ball allowing only 1 HR with 18 K's and 6 BB's. He went 4-1 with 3 saves in those appearances. Since moving to the rotation, Small has thrown 46.2 innings with an ERA sitting at 1.54. Only allowing 1 more home run in those innings, he's struck out 40 batters with 11 BB's. He's 3-1 in those starts.

The latest gem saw him only walk 2 batters while striking out 7 in the no-hitter effort.

A 13th round pick in 2042, he's arguably overshadowing another Canadian who was acquired very under the radar as an unheralded scouting find: reigning JL Nebraska winner Bill Constable.

"He's good man," said Constable. "He got his not hitter quicker than I did. He joins the club of no-hitters in team history so that's cool. We as a whole, including myself haven't been as good as last year but Small is picking up some of our slack. I know the lineup has to be happy he's on our side. He just knows how to pitch."

Only throwing 104 pitches in the incredible effort and without many innings on his arm this year, the team doesn't plan to limit his pitch count in his next start or going forward. With the team hanging around a wild card spot, Small continuing to pitch like a top of the rotation starter will be a big help in trying to get over that hump and get back in the playoffs.
