Warehouse Wire 2045.04: Dax Norris: Lefty Killer

Post by bcslouck » Tue Jan 26, 2021 5:58 am

Dax Norris is a former 1st round pick but never lived up to some lofty expectations. He looked like a power hitting plus CF coming out of High School. Injuries derailed his progress and he never really got it going. After being drafted in the expansion draft in 2039, he was waived in 2044 in the middle of the offseason. Charm City claimed the failed prospect.

Since coming to Charm City, Dax has turned his career around. While he still isn't the player once though to be, he's become a very good role player. After accumulating -1.8 WAR before being claimed, he's now gained 4.0 WAR in almost 2 seasons with the Jimmies. His plus defense in the corners of the outfield are big reasons for his value. He can even play CF okay enough in a pinch. However, he makes his bones destroying LHP.

To date in 2045, Norris has slashed 0.346/0.382/0.750 (1.132 OPS). 17 of his 21 HR's have come against LHP pitching, along with 10 of his 13 doubles and his only triple. He does have more AB's against LHP, but only by 34. While he seems to have found a niche in the BBA and has become a player with some value, he is awful against RHP, a 0.588 OPS. And here lies the problem.

After making earning $800,000 through arbitration in for 2044 and agreeing to $900,000 for 2045, Dax Norris is now asking for $4M in 2046. This, after the team and player has an agreed up number. Reports indicates it was in the mid $1M's. Norris's numbers have been absurd in the dog days months, OPS'ing 0.913 in July, 1.364 in August, and 1.307 in September. Again though, mainly in short sided platoon games. Now, the Jimmies need to decide if Norris is worth anything close to $4M. Reports indicate they do not.

The organization was reached out to for comment, but declined. Norris did not.

"You know. This is such a shit offense. It's crazy that they wouldn't want to pay anyone who hits anyone. I don't care if only am hitting LHP's right now. First of all, I don't want to be pigeon holed. I'm an every day player. What does the GM even know about building an offense? Not much obviously. I mean, he must have some idea getting a player like me for free. But that's about where his know how ends," he rambled on.

"Second, I'm the best damn hitter against lefties in this league. Pay me."

Going into the last week of games tonight, this could be the most interesting offseason for the organization yet.

Tommy Cochran did that for me last year. I think he had over a 1.200 OPS for most of the season, but when it came time to extend him I just couldn't pay him the $10+ mil he was asking when he couldn't hit righties. Now this season after he left he learns to hit righties. Norris asking $4 mil just might be worth it because he also gives you the glove.

This is a solid point. It may be depend on what Rafael does. I don't have a great track record of gambling on players for draft picks, but it'd be cool if he had another 2 WAR season and got me a pick after next year.
