Warehouse Wire 2045.01: Sabertooth Opt-In; So does CCJ

Post by bcslouck » Wed Nov 11, 2020 4:41 pm

GM Brandon Slouck figured he had a tough decision to make on star closer Fernando Márquez. After all, Sabertooth was coming off the best year in Charm City, and at 32 with a player opt-out, he looked like he was going. Instead, he decided to stay.

"We're happy he opted in," said the GM. "I really thought I was going to be working on an extension with Fernando. He's been steady in our bullpen, a weak spot for us. He made it easy to pick up his team option for 2045."

With a team option in 2046 as well, it seems like a lock that the team will pick it up. He really hadn't been the pitcher he was in Rockville since coming to Charm City, but he was a consistent, steady closer in a time the organization has struggled to put together a good 'pen. This was the first year he really stepped it up and looked like his younger self.

Fernando is a throw back to a time where closers pitched the 9th and that's really it. While he pitches in the 8th from time to time with, other more high leverage rolls have seen disaster for him. 2044 saw him stick to his closers roll and he was fantastic. Barring a trade of one of the teams current starting pitchers, Bill Constable will fill that stopper/high leverage role next year. Constable dominated in his limited innings and didn't seem to mind pitching at any time in the game. A full season of him and Fernando paired together should do well to help close out more games.

With Mauro Ríos signing for $2.5M and Fernando opting in at $6M, the Jimmies salary looks pretty set at $88.4M. This should give the team a decent amount of money to fill in some holes and try to get back on track in 2045.
