Warehouse Wire 2044.08: Cuts & Extensions

Post by bcslouck » Tue Nov 10, 2020 5:29 am

The Jimmies have already been busy cutting salary and buying out arbitration on players.

William Wood was cut before he could decided if he was going to opt-in or not. Shotaro Kawamura was also cut despite a solid year in the bullpen. He's already signed with Bucharest in the UMEBA where he should be a solid SP for them. And finally, after a great 2043, José Toledo was cut after the worst year of his career.

The cuts saved the team roughly $13,000,000 for 2045. Given their future expenses were over the cap, the team was not in a position to buy out arbitration for players they values. Wood wouldn't of netted a pick if he opt-ed out so the organization felt it was best to cut him now. Kawamura was a team option, so a similar decision was made to get future obligations under the cap. And Toleda was just not worth the $5.5M or so he was due to make. He was one of the biggest factors in Charm City winning 17 less games this past year.

Now for the arby signings.

First, is John Wilson. Despite a down year with more injury issues, he's worth the $775,000 flyer the team bought 2045 out for. He's shown to be at least a solid MR in his career.

Aires Gonzalez, claimed on waivers from Sacramento was really good in a short side platoon roll. His .290/.361/.486 (.847 OPS) overall with the team was well worth the $625,000 he signed for.

Another bargain was Dax Norris, who had a career year in Charm City after injuries derailed him. Despite the struggling in the dog days, $900,000 is well worth seeing if he can repeat his performance. At worst, he's a really good 4th OF for next year.

On 10/26, two players made commitments for 2045. Coming over a couple years ago from Hawaii, Jim Wilkinson finally had a year that has the team thinking he can be a top of the rotation type of arm. He has gotten better each year in Charm City and signed for $3,650,000. Also was Wllibald Akbulut. Despite still trying to figure things out and potentially an odd man out in the near future, he's a fan favorite and signed for $725,000.

Finally, the team signed Tomás Guillén. While his CF days appear to be done, the team is hoping a shift back to COF next will help get his bat back on track. The team feels good about signing him for $3,900,000.

The team is hoping to announce one more extension in the coming days to have the teams 2045 salary locked in. Salary obligations look to be $82.5M, give or take some. The organization has multiple needs and the flurry of moves was to clear up salary and get a good idea of what the team has for next year. Reports from the warehouse indicate the team already has an eye on a couple free agents and trade targets and hopes to land them to get back on track next season.

Aren't you still on the hook for his salary if you cut him?

Nah. Toledo is still in arbitration so his salary isn't guaranteed. The other 2 had team options so cutting them just has you pay the buyout. Could of waited but wanted the money off the salary books now.

Now if the money was guaranteed, yes I would be paying him. But the money would move to player expenses and comes off the salary cap number.
