Warehouse Wire 2044.07: Hill Fired

Post by bcslouck » Tue Nov 03, 2020 1:06 pm

Manager Zach Hill has been fired. He signed a 3 year extension last year.

Word is the organization was on the fence about him last year but felt Hill earned an extension after leading the team to a division title, the first for the franchise since 2032. Expectations were high this year and the team has fallen flat. The organization looks to be righting a perceived wrong but letting him go.

"We really appreciate what Zach did for the city," said GM Brandon Slouck. "We wish him all the best."

Not an overly glowing send off.

Signed out of the FEBL in 2039, the organization thought he was the perfect candidate to lead the young team to it's first playoff berth. After winning 77 games year 1, a 10 win improvement, the team improved another 10 wins to get to 87 in year 2, narrowly missing a Wild Card berth. With momentum building, 2041 looked like another chance to contend. But they didn't. They fell to 82-80. Then lost even more the next year. With 2043 being a year he needed to get things turned around, he did. And an extension followed. For better or worse.

As you can see above, Hill's legacy will be not being able to push very talented teams to levels less talented teams have reached. 2043 was magical, but that seems to be a case of getting hot at the right time despite the manager not pushing the right buttons. The talent finally just came through. And now, they're back where they were.

AAA manager Chris Riddle will take the helm. He has a great reputation around the league despite never coaching in the majors. At 60, he's probably just keeping the seat warm for AA manager Sergio Otero. All indications are, however, that Riddle "won't have to look over his shoulder." This appears to be his team as long as he can get them on the right track in 2044 and beyond.

Getting fired for going 74-80 may seem like a raw deal, especially with how some managers will probably keep their jobs for much worse. But this year was the final straw of a tenure of mediocrity and inconsistency that has worn on the powers that be within the Charm City front office.

Someone's head was going to roll, and it wasn't going to be the GM's.

Of course not. I've done everything perfect. Everyone else is the problem.
