Warehouse Wire 2041.03: Early Season Shuffling

Post by bcslouck » Tue Jan 07, 2020 8:13 am

Two weeks into the 2041 season, the team finds itself sitting 8-10. Not the start the organization or city hoped for.

It is very early however and the team finds itself on a 3 game win streak. The next weeks of games find them continuing there home series with Jacksonville before taking a trip down route 95 to Rockville for a 3 game set against the division leader.

The team appears to have run into some bad luck. The team ERA is a run and a half higher than the team FIP (5.58 to 4.28) and the teams offense seems to be producing near the top of the Atlantic in most offensive categories except for the most important one: runs. Things seem due for a flip.

This does not come without players struggling or being apart of the bad luck. Jimmies legend Carlton Winson looks to be done as a 3B and probably a BBA player between his horrid defense and slow start. He's been benched in favor of top 10 prospect José Toledo. While Toledo is no wizard with the glove himself, he should be an upgrade defensively while having better bat to ball skills at this point in his career than Winson. In 19 games at AAA, he slashed .348/.421/.758 (1.179 OPS, 192 OPS+, 181 wRC+) with 8 HR's. In just over a full season of AAA games the last 3 years (172 games) Toldeo has hit .289/.359/.512 (.897 OPS, 125 OPS+, 123 wRC+). He's ready.

It's a sad state of affairs for Winson who looked primed to get his 500th HR this season. His chances at the BBA HOF probably depends on it. Getting to that milestone looks bleaker now barring injury to Toledo or the teams DH.

Gary Schneider was DFA'd after a putrid start and will more than likely be released if a minor league assignment is not accepted.

RP Gilberto Tovar was also DFA'd in favor for another move. He will probably also be released if he doesn't accept minor league assignment.

Called up in his place is SP Thiongo Muiru. The veteran SP hasn't pitched in the BBA since the end of 2039. After a solid 4 starts at AAA for rehab, the team is looking forward to adding a solid SP that the team has dearly missed. Adding him to the rotation puts Nobuo Jouda back to the 'pen. Jouda has struggled as a SP but flourished in the bullpen last year. He gives the 'pen the lefty they have been missing this year.

Finally, Tomás Guillén was called up from AAA to patrol CF. He appeared ready but the organization wanted to see him have successful AB's at AAA after struggling last year. A .365/.429/.743 (1.172 OPS, 191 OPS+, 193 +wRC) with 8 HR's will do. This move pushes Francisco Méndez to the bench while optioning Young-sik Won back to AAA. Mario Rodríguez shifts from 2B to CF against LHP while David Guerra will now be the 2B against LHP.

The team is hoping that overall the flurry of moves will be a net positive. Most of the moves appear to be upgrades. Rodríguez is downgrade in CF defensively and Guerra is one at 2B, albeit a small one. But the 3 AAA callups should all at least be better than the players they are replacing.

While it's still early and the team hasn't put themselves into a deep hole, the organization felt they had seen enough of certain players and changes were needed right the ship as soon as possible.

Nice comeback story for Muiru after that injury.
