Warehouse Wire 2040.04 - Spring Training Studs & Duds

You can never read too much into Spring Training. That doesn't mean fans won't.

It's used to tune up your players for the upcoming 162 game grind while also serving as a place to let prospects face tougher competition to learn what they need to work on to stick with the club up North. It's also used to fill out benches as most teams have battles for the last few spots. Every year you see players light it up only to fail when the games count. Or guys struggle against weaker competition and go on to be Silk or Nebraska candidates. As was said above, you can never read too much into Spring Training.

You really just hope to get through games healthy. Charm City already failed that as SP Thiongo Muiru will be out for the remainder of this season and probably part of the next with torn rotator cuff. The team was hoping to bounce from a sophomore slump. It's a big blow to a staff that lacks depth. Luckily, that seems to be the only major injury this Spring.

Quinton Lara was one of the Spring Training studs for Charm City. Lara slashed .402/.432/.695 (1.127 OPS) in 82 at-bats, further solidifying that he's ready for the show. He was virtually a lock to be the Opening Day catcher so the team is please he came in to the Spring wanting to prove they made the right choice instead of just auto-piloting to a ML roster spot.

Mario Guerrer was another player who lit it up. Guerrer hit 4 HR's in only 50 at-bats, slashing .400/.455/.740 (1.195 OPS). After a solid but down year in 2039, the first of a 6 year deal, the team needs him to bounce back to his Rockville numbers if they hope to make a playoff bid. A lot of hitters lit it up this Spring and the team hopes that is a sign of things to come.

LHP Nobuo Jouda may of had the most surprising Spring however. A Rule 5 pick last year (still under Rule 5 status for 2040) who lost the year to a torn flexor tendon in his elbow, the team saw signs of some decline and speculation indicated he would be sent back to Hawaii. After throwing a 0.49 ERA in 18.1 innings with a 19 to 3 K/BB, the team decided to hang on to him a bit longer and he will make the Opening Day roster out of the bullpen.

On the flip side, Abay Omoruyi had a terrible Spring. His 0.538 OPS was the lowest out of the group of players slated for the Opening Day lineup. Rumors are that the team is looking for another option to patrol CF. While his glove is solid, it's not good enough to have a bat that bad.

José Toledo also struggled. He was projected to make the team as the weak side platoon 3B to get some ML experience. A 0.563 Spring OPS has him ticketed back to Annapolis to work on his bat some more.

On the pitching side, Juan Canó had a bad Spring. Already looking like a DFA candidate, the Spring didn't help him. His leash will be very short this year as it appears his skills have fallen off despite being only 28. A 1.85 WHIP and 6.35 ERA won't get it done. At the moment, he will hand RH specialist duties.

Overall, it seems the organization is pretty happy with how Spring Training turned out. A lot of bats popped. The prospects that didn't got some valuable time against some of the toughest competition they've faced to this point while rubbing elbows with future ML teammates. The lineup has a chance to be very good with some of the added bats. The pitching is still a big question mark.

The Jimmies open the season at home against the Las Vegas Hustlers.
