Warehouse Wire 2038.07: Who's our All-Star?
The team sits at 28-36 following a tough 1-6 week with 4 one-run losses. The team was 5-2 in these games going into the week with the bullpen being the reason for hovering around .500. With all that said, the Jimmies have been a little bit of a surprise this year. It was tough to see anyone really talented enough to put up All-Star worth numbers. 3B Carlton Winson is the most known player on the team and a former All-Star. He was the best bet given his track record despite his decline in play. But he isn't the favorite at the moment. Let's take a look at a couple of potential players.
CF Mario Rodríguez
Called up straight from A after a subpar Spring to play a position that isn't his best, Rodríguez has been sensational. If his production continues through the season, he will at worst be in the conversation for the JL Gillstrom. His .322 batting average sits just outside the Top 10 in the Johnson. He carries with it a .860 OPS, good for a 120 OPS+ and 119 wRC+. His OPS, OPS+, and wRC+ are 3rd in the JL by a CF while is 1.3 WAR sits 5th. He is the Jimmies MVP at this point. If he isn't voted in and no other Jimmie is, he seems to be the best candidate given his success and position flexibility. To this point, it's hard to argue he isn't the team MVP.
C Peadar McIihome
Not too often do you see Rule 5 picks be potential All-Stars. But McIihome has managed that. The team was platooning him early in the season but the team recognized quickly him playing every day was his best option. At the time of this writing, 1.2 plate appearances (PA) short of qualification. When narrowed down to a minimum of 150 PA's, he's been best hitters (of any position) in the league. His .354 batting average sits 3rd in the JL overall, the best by a C. His 22 doubles sits tied 4th in the league, but again best by a C. His lack of HR power probably hurts his chances. His 1.2 WAR is 4th by a catcher in the JL. That hurts his chances over Rodríguez. The All-Star team will have 2, maybe 3 catchers. The same team will probably have at least 5 outfielders. While McIihome is having a great year and we aren't sure when the last time a Rule 5 pick made the All-Star team was, he probably only gets in if Rodríguez isn't voted or picked to represent the team.
Bullpen arm?
While the above 2 players are viable candidates, it's very possible one of the team's back end bullpen arms could be the pick. Free agent pickup Jason Morris (well on his way to Type A comp status if he opts-out... oh wait..) has been really good as the team's closer/stopper. He's 11/13 on save opportunities with a 2.31 ERA. His 33 games pitched is tied for 3rd in the JLA. He's also pitched more than a inning the majority of the time, throwing 50.2 innings over his appearances. José Salas has also been really good. He hasn't pitched as much the last month or so at the fault of the Jimmies. His K/9 (11.14) is outstanding with an ERA lower than Morris' and an even lower FIP (2.70, 2.32). His innings count will probably keep him out unless the team ramps that back up in June, which they may plan to do. Finally, Alfredo Sosa who was called up late in April, has been right up there with his 2 'pen mates. With 43 innings thrown over 18 games (2.33 per), he has really thrown well. Dominating RHP while allowing a .588 OPS, he's also held LHP to .702 OPS. Though he has started off June slow with 2 bad appearances, his ERA still sits under 3.00 (2.72). These 3 arms are the reason the team hasn't been as hopeless as previous years.
There you have it. While none of these players blow anyone away, I think they all have at least a decent case as to why they should be the team's All-Star without feeling like they'll only be picked because someone has to represent Charm City. Our pick is Rodríguez given his value to the team and amount of OF'ers that make the roster. But this seems to be a year that Charm City actually has some decent options. That has to bode well for the future. Right?

Re: Warehouse Wire 2038.07: Who's our All-Star?
Rodriguez seems like a legitimate possibility - and you’re right that he has a better shot because there are more outfielders on the team than catchers. Also helps that he plays CF, I would think. Interesting piece - glad you added the poll!

Our all star team is going to suck this year. There are probably 5-6 of us with this dilemma. I say we just not vote and send Rockville to beat the Frick.

I actually feel pretty good about my rep this year. I believe whoever it'll be is deserving.
