Warehouse Wire 2038.01: "We're all told"

Post by bcslouck » Tue Mar 05, 2019 10:37 am

"We're all told at some point in time that we can no longer play the children's game, we just don't...we don't know when that's gonna be. Some of us are told at eighteen, some of us are told at forty, but we're all told." - Moneyball

While some players go on to have long careers, securing millions of dollars that will take care of generations. For everyone one of those, thousands don't even make it to the show. Unfortunately for Fernando Flores, he is one of those thousands.

Born in Santiago de los Caballeros, or simply Santiago, in the Dominican Republic, Flores didn't grow up in the usual poor areas you think of when you think of the beginnings of some of the best players in the World. He was born in the middle of an economic boom for the city that has become the center of most of the countries exports. By all accounts he was smart kid and worked hard in school and helping his parents with their successful cigar business. Though he seemed destined for bigger things, he couldn't shake his love for baseball.

While he didn't have the same skill as some of the local talent just before him, such as Juan Cano and Emilio Paredes, he always caught the attention of the coaches. A natural born leader, he was always the first one at instructions and the last one leaving the field. Charm City scouts took notice. The lack of skill was overlooked for his intangibles. They saw a kid who would turn a corner physically down the road and become that diamond found among the rough. He was signed and started training in the DR Academy immediately.

Four years later, he finally made it to a professional club, being assigned to Rookie Ball Assateague. After a great season at R-ball, throwing to a 2.28 ERA in 67 innings, the team left him at R ball. He was pitching successfully again out of the bullpen when he was unexpectedly cut. Shocked, he went back to the DR and began working with his parents once again with thoughts of going to University.

He officially announced his retirement at the young tender age of 21 on November 7th, 2037.

About a week later, GM Brandon Slouck was discussing the coaching openings in the organization with his Assistant GM Arthur Bennett and some of the other coaches in the organization, including Pitching Coach Dale Wood. Wood was recently promoted from Assateague to Bowie, taking the same position while leaving an opening at the R-ball team.

"Any ideas on some young up and comers in the coaching ranks," asked GM Brandon Slouck of his staff.

"We released this kid and he just retired," answered Dale Wood. "Very young but he has the makings of being a great coach. Could be a good option for Assateague. Fernando Flores."

Back in Santiago, Fernando is packing a box of cigars for the mornings shipment. His father comes into the back room. "Hijo. Llamada telefónica para usted." As Fernando wonders who could be calling him, he goes to his father's office where it's GM Brandon Slouck on the line. Fernando nods multiple times, thanks him, and hangs up the phone with a big smile on his face. His father, looking at him quizzically asks him what the call was about in Spanish. "Ese fue el Jimmies. Ellos quieren que yo sea un entrenador," says Fernando. The Jimmies want him to coach the low level baseball team.

"We're all told at some point in time that we can no longer play the children's game."

That doesn't mean the game is done with you.
