Warehouse Wire 2037.02: Rule 5 Recap

Post by bcslouck » Wed Nov 28, 2018 9:51 am

In an effort to continue to acquire talent, the Jimmies selected two players in the latest Rule 5 draft.

The team did not lose anyone in this years draft. That should not come as a surprise.

Drees Geestman and Buddy Bruggeman are the newest players in Charm City and both should have a decent chance at sticking on the club given the lack of mature talent in the organization and moves this offseason to date.

Geestman was taken with their 1st round pick, which was the number 1 overall pick, comes from the Omaha organization. He possess an above average cutter and a plus curveball. The Belgian righty should be able to be solid against batters no matter what side of the plate they hit from. He has shown to be a loyal player despite being a little greedy and the ability to lead when it's needed. He was solid in his 27 innings at AA last year, posting a 3.67 ERA (3.64 FIP). He'll probably be on of the last guys in the 'pen and come in a mop up duty.

Bruggeman was drafted in the 2nd round from Nashville. He was originally signed out of Holland when Nashville was still Halifax. Buddy has been pegged a captain his whole life, always leading by example. Defensively, he can play just about anywhere on the diamond. His bat is below average, however. While he can take a walk here and there and won't strikeout much, he doesn't make a ton of contact and when he does it's for very little power. Given the team has been looking for another utility player on a league minimum contract, he has a strong chance to stick.

Neither guy will be game changers for the Jimmies. They are role players the team hopes can contribute in 2037 and beyond.
