Warehouse Wire 2036.05: Team brings back Carrillo

Post by bcslouck » Sat Sep 15, 2018 8:01 am

Luis Miguel Carrillo was uncerimoniously waived by San Fernando last season. The franchise that moved from Havana, where Carrillo was a part of that cities first championship before being moved to California. The Bears saw it as a chance to shed some salary. The Jimmies saw it as a chance to add a talented hitter who never seemed to fit in with that team, as evidence by about a half season worth of games of below average production. And a chance to get an inside track on resigning him.

The move to Charm City seemed to reinvigorate the long time veteran. After move across country, Carrillo slashed .244/.371/.469, good for a 117 OPS+ and 122 wRC+. The team tried to get him locked up on a deal but the resurgence seemed to push him and his agent to want to test free agency. And so they did.

They were looking for a long term deal. The Jimmies were looking to get him for 2 years, with year 2 being a team option. That has been the standard this season for the team. Multiple vets have been signed to team friendly deals like this in an effort to have some talent without the long term commitment. This also boost the trade value of these players if they happen to succeed or let the team cut bait if they fail. They managed to do that and have also had a similar strategy with team mainstays.

After a long offseason, where Carrillo and Charm City went back and forth without seeming to come close, Carrillo called up the team asking to reopen negotiations. Quickly, they came to an agreement: 2 years $25,000,000 with.. you guessed it.. year 2 being a team option.

With his "best" catching days are behind him, the plan was to have him catch against RHP and DH versus LHP. But after the Spring Tranining injury of Byron Hearle, it seems he will do the opposite for now, catching against LHP while DH'ing versus RHP, with Gabriel Santana getting the nod against RHP, strictly on the back of his elite defense.

Carrillo will bat in the middle of the linep. The team is hoping he can repeat his production of last year after coming over off waivers. Carrillo, the team, and the fans all happy to see him back in Baltimore. But one has to question. How long will he be here?
