Warehouse Wire 2036.04: Murillo is a Jimmie

Post by bcslouck » Tue Sep 04, 2018 12:45 pm

In stunning breaking news, the Jimmies have signed SP Felipe Murillo. Viewed as the best pitcher on the market, the team signed him to a 2 year $27,000,000 contract with the second year being a team option with a $4,000,000 buyout (going off memory.. I believe it was $4M).

Murillo was a terrific closer for Louisville, while also starting some games, from 2026 to 2034. Despite this, he's had a litany of injuries and a bloated contract, causing him to be exposed in the expansion draft and taken by Boise with the 5th overall pick (3rd round). Missing the first 4 months of last season to injury, he went on to make 16 starts and pitching to a 3.19 ERA (4.55 FIP). Metrics suggest he may of been rusty but managed to still put up solid numbers.

"We're happy to have him," said GM Brandon Slouck. "He's a top arm in the rotation or 'pen. The plan is to have him lead our rotation and see what he can do."

When asked if he was surprised how quickly a deal go done, all the GM could do was smirk and said "no, not at all."

"Of course not. Who wouldn't want to play here? In all honesty, yes, we were. We knew a lot of teams would be interested and given our contract wasn't along term one, we were. But we are very happy it was done."

While he will be the number one guy on a team in the middle of a rebuild, he could be gone as early as next season. The team is heavily protected. If he does well, he can be dangled for a solid package of prospects given he has a team option for another year. The team could also opt to keep him if they surprisingly do well or don't find the right deal. They could also decline his option if he falters or gets hurt, which as noted before, happens quite a bit. Though given the team's future commitments, they may well keep him even if he struggles, hoping he can regain value the following season.

For a team in the position Charm City is, the potential reward greatly outweighs the risk.

as much as I have criticized murillo, the structure of this deal is a great one. Nice pickup.

Yeah, the deal is very CC friendly. :hi5:
I hope he gets to actually pitch some between injuries.

Very good deal for the jimmies.

The truly amazing quality about Murilla is that with as many injuries he's seen, he hasn't lumped a bit. I guess cause a great deal of his injuries we're back related. But he did have some serious arm injuries too.
