Warehouse Wire 2035.11: June 1

Post by bcslouck » Thu Jul 05, 2018 10:41 am

The calendar has flipped to June. A deadline set by the GM himself on what direction the team would go in 2035 after stumbling out of the gate to 12-15 April and even worse first half of May. Despite only being 26-30 after our June 1 game, the Jimmies are still only 6 games out of the division and 4 out of the Wild Card.

"We still haven't hit our stride,' said GM Brandon Slouck. "I think at this point we have to keep on moving forward. We still have 2/3 of a season left. Plenty of time to get on track and make some noise."

While that is true, the team needs to get on track in a hurry. They have gone 12-7 over the last 19 games, which will get it done over an extended period of time. The team clearly has some top talent that can carry them. But it's a miracle at this point that they are even in this position with the players just not doing their job.

Former Nebraska winner Egbert Behner has been awful to this point. Arturo Reyes has been even worse and has been optioned to AAA. Tony Canales has an ERA as bad as those guys but that has been driven by some bad luck. Alfredo Salazar, Paul Backstrom, and Maximo Quezada have provided virtually nothing on offense while also not giving plus value on defense. The team is still working on boosting C options without adding too much to their salary.

That is not without guys pulling their weight. Carlton Winson still has a .944 OPS with 20 HR's despite not really going on one of his tears. The resurgence of Byron Hearle has really helped the team at the top of the lineup, providing power and OBP from the leadoff spot against RHP. Aubrey Anderson is having his usual hot first half and the team hopes this is a year he holds up all year for a career year. Irving Espinoza has also been very solid and has shown he may not be a fluke. The bullpen has also been among the better ones in the JL despite some key injuries and has a bright future.

From the info us here at the Warehouse Wire can gather, the team plans to make a move at some point before the deadline. Sources say they would like to add a SP though they are really hoping Claudio Escobedo can step in and help fill that void with improvement from the others. The C market seems to have some decent options and the team has had talks with various teams, but those talks have stayed fairly cold. That could be another direction for the team. The team has also been looking to acquire a middle infielder, though Jose Munoz has been very good with the glove and solid with the bat thus far as the starting 2B. Expect the team to be active on the market in hopes to make another playoff push in the next 2/3 of the season.

It seems like the trade deadline is really the pivotal moment for Charm City.

It looks like your starting to show a little life. It's crushing to see so many players bat under the mendoza line all at the same time in April. I think you hold pat for June and see what happens. These same guys may crush the ball to even out a bad season. To have the pitching struggles you did and the batting struggles all at the same time and only be 4 games under .500 is actually impressive.
