Warehouse Wire 2035.06: Carlton Winson

Post by bcslouck » Sun Jun 10, 2018 7:49 pm

Carlton Winson will be a Jimmie for at least another 5 years.

Already locked up through the 2035 season, the 2 time Sawyer Silk winner signed a 6 year $147,000,000 extension that starts in 2036. The deal is front loaded and will pay him $31,000,000 in each of the first 2 years and $24,500,000 for years 3 and 4. After year 4, he was given a player opt-out. If he opts to stay in his deal, he will make $18,000,000 each of the last 2 years. Chances are, if he decides to not opt-out, the first 4 years of the deal didn't pan out as well as the organization would like.

"We are ecstatic to announce the Carlton will be here for at least another half decade," said a beaming Brandon Slouck, General Manager of the Jimmies. "We gave up a good amount to get him and he was worth it in the time we were to have him. But we felt like him and the rest of this team have unfinished business."

"We do have unfinished business," Winson cut in. "Absolutely. I'm so happy we got a deal worked out. I didn't like hearing my name on the block, but I know it's business. They made it clear they would rather keep me and we never stopped talking after the season ended. I'm happy I'm staying here and I hope we can bring a Landis to this incredible fanbase."

When we polled Twitter users on how they felt about the deal, 94% were happy to get it done. Most saw it as a move to prove to the fan base that the organization does plan to keep doing what it can to stay competitive and try to win a Landis.

However, some saw it as an overpay. "That's a lot of money to commit to a guy entering his age 33 season at the start of the deal. #justsaying," said user jimmiesfan6969. "We should of traded him for what we could get. Our farm is trash. #nofuture," said user jroze2000.

Clearly not everyone is a fan of the deal. But the points above are valid. It is a lot of money to commit to a player of his age. But, the hope is the years he is really getting paid, he still produces. And while the farm isn't trash, with improvements in drafting developing, and the new wave of international talent the team picked up, it still isn't particularly strong, lacking top level talent. Trading Winson could of solved that issue, though from reports, GM Brandon Slouck had some solid offers, but nothing he seriously considered.

"We didn't want to trade Winson, but it's business and we at least had to explore it some," said the 2 time JL GM of the Year. "For a player like him, we would of had to of been blown away. That offer just never came."

At this point, it doesn't matter if it never came. Everyone seems to be happy that deal never came, from the GM, to Winson himself, to the players on the team, and especially to the fanbase, as ticket sales have increased since the announcement of his signing. Maybe this is what exactly the team needed to do.

Congrats on the signing. Understandable if he had to go, but it's nice to see him stay in place.

One thing I don't recall mentioning is that it's a rock and a hard place situation since you can't just let him leave - so I empathize with the decision.

I'm sure their were some eyebrows raised, but that's okay. You're right, I couldn't let him go for just a comp. And I had some offers that weren't bad, and some I at least though about in terms of "something is here, we may be able to work something out." But then I'd dive deeper and just not see much else I'd want or it seemed maybe their wasn't much more I could get. I needed to be blown away.

And to add, I wanted those last 2 years to be team options, but he wasn't having it. I tried it all offseason. I offered big bonuses for Sawyer Silk's and All-Stars, offered at least 25% buyouts. I probably would of had to pay him like $40M total to get those in based on where he was going with his numbers. And I figure by front loading it, I'm paying him in what should be his more productive years. If he is at least 75% of the player he's been after the 4 years, my thinking is he will opt-out thinking he can get more. At that point, I won't mind letting him walk. I get though, ages 33-36 seasons may be asking much for the 75%+, but I'm gambling he can still hit for power and get us a Landis in that time period.

You are a braver man than I, sir. Had I seen those contract demands, I surely would have dealt him. Best of luck to Winson and the Jimmies!
