Warehouse Wire 2035.05: IFA Talent Infusion
When calculating the taxes, the Jimmies spent $8,770,000 during the 2035 international signing period. While the team did not sign any of the "big fish," they did manage to pull in 11 prospects from around the World.
On January 4th, they signed 3B Velimir Sujic out of Bulgaria, 1B Gonzalo Sepúlveda out of Mexico, RF Javier López out of Panama, C Rodrigo Matos out of Costa Rica, CF Alberto Velásquez out of the Dominican Republic. In bonuses, the team spent $3,285,000 on these players.
On January 29th, they signed CF Young-sik Won out of South Korea, SS Felipe Velázquez out of Venezuela, 3B José Parreno out of Puerto Rico, 1B Khai Da out of China, C Finley Sturt out of Trinidad & Tobago, and SS Felipe Galván out of Bolivia. In bonuses, the team spent $1,600,000 on these players.
López and Velásquez stand out as not only the more talented players in the bunch, but as 17 year old young men who may go right to short season ball in June. Both project to at least be Major League starters down the road.
"We really like the players we got," said GM Brandon Slouck. "We usually approach IFA's for quantity as they can be unpredictable, but we think we managed to get quality quantity this year. We saw a lot of young interesting players we liked, and made offers to most of them. We are happy with the haul and hope these youngsters are Jimmies in the near future."
From what we can gather, this seems to be the biggest haul of prospects the team has gained during this period in its short existence. 4 of them are already listed among the teams top prospects. This isn't too shocking as they system is fairly barren. With these signings, it adds some depth to a shallow system, despite how unpredictable these guys may be. With a it a mission of the Charm City GM to start to restructure the farm system this winter, this is a big step towards that.

I always like the idea of sweeping up a bunch of guys and letting the development gods do their work.

Me too. I don't jump on the higher tier guys here because most of these guys go crazy on them. I probably wouldn't offer more than $6-7M for a guy. I'm sure there is one I would, but a lot of boxes would have to be checked.

Why is that different than signing a bunch of 18 year old MIL FAs for free, though?RonCo wrote:I always like the idea of sweeping up a bunch of guys and letting the development gods do their work.

Though part of the luxury of paying these guys is having them sit in the IC if you think they aren't ready. That doesn't roll up pro service time, which is valuable if that POT bumps, but they are developing slow. Those free 18 y/o MiLC's don't afford you that.

Anymore, that's not true. Pro service time starts in the IC, as it does in real life.

I always assumed that the IC stunted dev anyway (no playing time) and tried to rush the good prospects out as soon as feasible.

I haven't seen any data to suggest that's true, but I suppose I could test it.agrudez wrote:I always assumed that the IC stunted dev anyway (no playing time) and tried to rush the good prospects out as soon as feasible.

Re: 2035.05 Warehouse Wire - IFA Talent Infusion
On the whole, IFA's tend to be a bit better prospects than your average 18 year-old Minor League FA.agrudez wrote:Why is that different than signing a bunch of 18 year old MIL FAs for free, though?RonCo wrote:I always like the idea of sweeping up a bunch of guys and letting the development gods do their work.
But, yes, I do a sweep of the minor leagues aver month or two, also.
