Charm City 2061.5 - Jimmies focus on Hitting in draft

Post by DaveB » Tue Nov 12, 2024 12:07 pm

As the 2061 draft concluded the Charm City Jimmies added 20 fresh faces to out farm system with 11 fielders and 9 pitchers being selected.

In the first round the Jimmies selected C: Edgardo Reyes. We view Reyes as a plug and play catcher. As of now he's our catcher of the future when Tokimasa Yano is ready to move on. If Reyes can perform up to his potential I don't see why a .700-.750 OPS would be out of the question along with solid reliable defense behind the plate. When you can add the equivalent of a starting catcher deep in the first round like we did it's a huge addition in my opinion. This is especially true since most of our other catching prospects who I feel have starting traits are deep in the minors.

For us the potential steal of the draft was selecting 1B: Kenny Greaves in the second round. There isn't any other way to describe this selection other than being a boom or bust selection. Scouts and other GM's around the league have said Greaves has "Light tower power" and that's a way that I felt. My thought process was if you have the chance to take a prospect with the upside that Greaves has in the 2nd round you have to do it. I was hoping to select a pitcher in the second round after drafting Reyes in the first round, but Greaves was to tantalizing to pass up.

The first pitcher we selected was Owen 'Tangles' Byram. I think Byram will end up in the bullpen in the long term if he is to make the active roster, but he has a good work ethic. Hopefully his intangibles will allow him to blossom in our minor league system.

All pretty solid picks given how low you draft.
