Warehouse Wire 2042.06: Another Year, Another Miss

Post by bcslouck » Wed May 20, 2020 7:41 am

The Jimmies are out of the playoffs again. This marks the teams 8th straight playoff miss. 2034 was the team's last playoff appearance, when the team set a franchise record with 106 wins but still didn't win the JLA and were bounced in the Geoghegan.

Some say this could be the most talented team in franchise history so many are wondering why they couldn't get it done. The terrible start certainly didn't help but a 15 game win streak ending July and going into August got them firmly back in the mix. Going 24-31 after the streak put them back out. 32-49 on the road didn't help. It's driven by a terrible start on the road, with 19 of 27 games in April on the road.

Highs include Wilson Andrade cementing himself as the best SS in the league and one of the top young players the BBA has. Feliciano Rafael stayed healthy after being acquired and did what the team needed from him. He should net them at least a comp B pick in the Amateur Draft, though the team may try to resign him depending on his demands.

Some not so great things were the teams rotation as a whole, finishing 12th (5.18 ERA) in the JL, and the teams lack of getting on base, fishing 11th (.336). Jorge Nevárez had another bad year and another major injury. Signed through 2043, his future is in doubt and will need to prove his worth. Quinton Lara wasn't bad, but he was the worst of his career. Lara set career lows in most batting categories, driven by a weak Summer after a hot start in April and May. He wants a lot of money in an extension and will need to bounce back to earn it.

Manager Zach Hill was already on the hot seat and it's possible he's out the door soon. The organization is still in talks with ownership and Hill to figure it out. He hasn't earned an extension but you never want a lame duck manager. GM Brandon Slouck is also on the hot seat and rightfully so. It's been 8 years of the tear down and rebuild and it just hasn't come to fruition. Is he out? Possibly.

As of now, the team has $30M available for next year. That's before any possible opt-out and non-tenders. The team has a lot of holes. They could use a 2B to let Drew move to the OF, a 1B/DH with more thump. That is an issue that plagues his team. They have some good bats but no true power threats. They also just need pitching, as most teams do. They could use at least a SP and RP at this point. They should have the money to get most of their needs.

The team with high exceptions is left to wonder why they failed and what is needed to get back in the playoffs.

Tough year for the jimmies in the end. It's so hard to dig out of that kind of hole.

Solid year out of Rafael! Looks like the trade benefited you more than me this season, though Guerrer posted a little more than I expected initially. Verhoeve did very little.

Yeah. What I got out of him is what we needed. Solid, steady innings out of the starter. Just didn't get much help from other pitchers.
